starting from scratch, what sound card and speakers should I put in my PC to:

o play decent quality music (on all speakers)
o play games in surround sound
o play dvds in surround sound

(I have an Audigy 2 ZS and Creative Inspire 5500 - but surround sound only works on DVD playback - apparently card and speakers are bad match)

As always with sound, you'd always be better off buying a decent set of hi-fi speakers and an amp. But pc speakers are more convenient, so I'd recommend the Logitech Z-5500's (second last ones from the bottom).

As for a soundcard, go for the HDA Digital X-Mystique, it's got a built in real-time decodery thingy. Which according to a bunch of people I've talked to plays everything in surround sound (not sure about music though).

I've got both those items but they're aren't actually hooked up yet. But when they are I'll let you know how they work out.

Not really, the ZS can't play games in surround...where as the HDA card does, with it's built in real time decodery thingy.
