Diverting incoming messages: is it possible?

I'm heading off to the UK for the weekend, and I've decided to try diverting messages sent to my Irish Meteor mobile to my Virgin number in the UK. Anyone know if it's possible to divert incoming messages - and if so how?

text messages aren't considered data calls
you'd have to get on to your service provider to sort this

When I was on Vodafone I asked and was told that it wasn't possible. (read: they can't be bothered to set up such an ultimitly futile service as they haven't fully grasped the widespread popularity of SMS yet)
