    Hey,
I'm wondering what you guys would reccomend in a harddrive.
Either ATA or SATA... not too bothered about that.
Really what I need most of all is a harddrive that isn't going to die within a few months and lose a load of data, a reputation for reliability... decent enough capacity ~200gigs... good performance etc.
I'll probably pick something up from komplett, so I'm reading lots of reviews... but is there anything that stands out head and shoulders above the rest, that you'd reccomend?

    Cheers.

Been looking at hdd's myself recently. Seagate seem to be the reliability kings. 5 year warranty on all their drives says a lot tbh.

Consider an External HDD, they are generally built to last and the portability is great.
MAXTOR is one Ive used a few times, Ive another one I got in the states for cheap, 160Gb, encased in freakin carbonite or something but Ive dropped it, put it the hold on loads of flights and generally kicked the crap out of it and it still functions fine.

Plus I can bring my entire DVD & MP3 collection with me when travelling.

Caveat - USB 2 or firewire if you have the choice.

Is firewire much faster than usb's on an external harddrive?

If it's USB1 then hell yeah.
If it's USB2 then their bandwidth should be about the same afaik.

in real terms firewire is far faster than usb2. 480 is the burst speed of usb2 but over a sustained period it never gets near that. transfering files to an ipod by firewire is far faster than usb2. also the new version of firewire is 800 !!! most modern harddrives are very reliable. i've got a western digital 10,000 rpm sata and it's an absolute flier.

    Samsung P120S SP250C (250Gb)

High drive density, LOW noise (28dBA under load!), and apparently equal to or better than a Raptor in some tests
I'm gettin' me 1 of those!

    IMHO

Western Digital - a balance of reliability speed and sound, I had one fail on me though, after that I'm a big shaken.
Seagate - reliable very nice warranty, but people said it's a bit slow
Maxtor - quite good, but many people reported failures
Samsung - very quite, don't know about anything else

personally if I had to buy one I'd go like this

    Storage: Seagate
    OS Drive: Western Digital
    Quite PC: Samsung
