PS3 not until 2007?

Just saw this article (via slashdot). There may be a chance the PS3 won't be out until 2007, depending on how successful the 360 is.

    http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20050804-5170.html

Granted this is only conjecture but it makes a certain amount of sense. They are already beaten to a first release anyway, so they could possibly hold off until xmas 2006 which would allow developers to get to grips with the new platform and build up a good stock of games.

    by my wise "prognoses" ;)

I think it won't be released until 8, or atleast be available, or be worth buying

    1. doesn't Japan get it in 2006/2007?
    2. then the US
    3. Europe is always the last
    4. the first series usually come with bugs, PS2? it will be a year before they fix that stuff.

Hmmm i'm not sure giving microsoft another 6 months head start isa good idea. I think most people would be willing to wait 6 months or so for the ps3 but a year? Not a chance.

well bollocks to that cos halo 3 is realeased to co-incide with the release of the ps3 and i want halo 3 yesterday.

PC technology would have to be behind before it has to catch up ;)

If you look at the next gen specs pc tech is behind ciaran.

away outta that ya eejit. think about it a pc that is built and speced out even to half of what it is capable of destoys the next gens. battlefield 2 is out now and runs on a decent PC, never mind this waiting for the 360, same with Farcry instincts. Gaming PC's will always out preform consoles.

Current PC tech might be behind but by the time we see PS3 we will have the next batch of graphics cards and processors out which will over power the next gen consoles.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 18,115 ✭✭✭✭ShiverinEskimo

This is degenerating into a "pc is better than console argument". Hateful.

2007? nuts to that. I'm not waiting that long for a new console.

    my thought exactly.
The idea that Sony could make the ps2 attractive enough to realistically challenge a next gen machine is silly. If and when the ps2 drops below €100 it will be the signal that almost all development has shifted to the ps3 and that the ps2 is now a has-been. Just like with the PSone, a cheaper ps2 will only attract people with very young children who don't want to splash out hundreds on something their 5 year old wont appreciate.
Many will buy the 360 at launch, but others will wait until spring '06 to make a more informed decision, if they're told to wait another 6 months they'll just go with the 360 and worry about the others when they finally come out.
Besides, isn't it becoming more and more obvious that the new releases for this generation are shrinking by the day, mainly because development is shifting to next gen?

ill still prrobably end up getting both of em, so i dont mind a wait between xbox and ps3

easily possible with europe as for america and japan though the ps3 will be out way earlier there

It can't be behind cause its not out yet. :)

Um have you seen any of the demos or looked at any of the specs? I know they aren't out yet and pc tech will probably be on par by the time it comes out. When pc's have cell or 3 core processors i'll agree with you, until then get a clue before calling someone en eejit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,225 ✭✭✭Ciaran500

Any of the demos I have seen would be possible on top of the line current PCs and alot of the games are coming out on the PC as well as next gen e.g. Gears of War, COD 2.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,300 ✭✭✭CiaranC

A top of the line PC that could run those demos would cost 6 or 7 times the price of the xbox 360....

And this article is still pure speculation.

If this is the case, people who weren't planning on getting an xbox 360 may buy one to fill the waiting gap. I'm strongly thinking of getting one (xbox) now.

The article speculates that Sony will hold back only if the 360 doesn't take off.

but one of the factors that will damage xbox sales is the market that will wait for the ps3 before making a decision, but putting off their launch Sony will almost certainly help 360 sales.

But not by a significant amount. They'll sit on the release only if it's beneficial to them. If the 360 sales do start to pick up then they can move the release forward again. They'll dangle the carrot in front only as far as they can get away with.

I don't care how much they delay it, I just hope they will redisign a "grill" they call ps3 and it's controller too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 531 ✭✭✭Lord Oz

They'd better change the spiderman font too.

i dont really see a problem in wat the console looks like aslong as it plays well
but the controller does need to b comfortable and fit in your hands well

The ps3 will be the same as the ps2 gamewise rehash after rehash example Tekken 6

I really have to say what a load of cockwash that is. The PS3 is on schedule for release in Spring 06 for Japan/Far east. WE may not get it until 2007 due to marketing/production lies (to drive the price up and create a parting of the sea style frenzy). I mean <smug face> come on, will Sony really give XboX 360 a full year and a half of free market on these shores? NO

The same could be said of any format. There are plenty of original titles in the pipeline as well.

The PS3 will be out in 2006....I know this for a fact (unless Sony know something my sources who work for them don't).

If you don't believe me, care to place any bets?

Please...I've just spent all my money and need more

Eh believe it or not im sitting in the office loading up a brand new line of Pc's with 3core processors!!!

Also Intel are due to launch the multi core pentium in the new few weeks to the general public... so you may want to rephrase that comment...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

What speed are the 3 cores? I don't need to rephrase it anyway. I said i'd agree with him when it is avialable to the general public. When they are released they will probably cost more than the 360 and ps3 combined.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,235 ✭✭✭iregk

They will trust me. These are running at 3.5 ghz a piece. The thing is there is nothing available to run on them yet, as in you can't simply throw windows xp on and let rip!!!

We are a software house so all we have is our s/w running on them at the minute. So pretty much all this, it will run at twice the speed of this or PS3 and XBOX bashing each other with benchmark tests is pure tripe. There isn't even any benchmark software available to test on this architecture so really we have no idea which one will be better if any!!!

But so far these machines cost €4,500 a piece. Now thats without tax so you can get a ball park for how much we are talking to the average joe for one of these processors when available. It ain't cheap...

PS3 will be out in EU in 2006, it had better be.

Japan will def get theirs Apr/May 06 with US Euroland 3rd 1/4 DEF before year end.

thats exaclty it iregki >u could probably buy 10 x ps3's with the same performance for 1 of your 3 core PCs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,225 ✭✭✭Ciaran500

Where are these "DEF"'s coming from?

He may have put it wrong, but for all the games industry care you could be sitting beside a modern supper computer. If it has three cores, or if it’s one of the fastest computers in the world, it doesn’t matter. Unless, it’s standard among the target audience.

What do you think 4 and 8 way processors run on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

there is no guarantee the triple core has a similar interface to the OS as a 4 way processor box...3 cores on one chip and all that....sharing resources and so on, probally does require specific OS coding

4 and 8 way processors can work with current software. multi core processors are more tricky as in they are in effect (ok this is basic and leaving out lots of technical info) basically 3 processors running and using 3 completely different sets of cache and to add to it, the 3 cores are for different tasks, as in its not 3 core load bearing. its core #1 physics, core #2 general data, core #3 math sub routines (again basic and not exact info) so code does need to be written direct for these processors.

In the case of servers where they have multi cpus its a lot simpler. They are basically load bearing and sharing, i.e. you have a road with heavy traffic, stick in a dual lane instead will speed things up.

AMD and Intel have had multi core and cell processors ready to go for months now. Why haven't they been released? Because there is nothing yet ready to work on them so they is no point in releasing them. In the next couple of months you will see AMD are releasing the dual core and Intel to follow shortly.

Monument, good point and to be fair your right.

MrPink, trust me XP will not run on a multi core machine. In fact it wont even load!!! To add to that, our software designed to run on it is completely unstable, due to cache issues. That tells you how tricky it is.
