Buying external hard drive - advice

I need to buy extra hard drive space, and have decided on an external USB 2.0 drive. Komplett have these 2 which look good to me.

    Maxtor One Touch USB2.0 300GB 16MB cache 7200 RPM for €223
Western Digital USB2.0 320GB 8MB cache Dual Option Media Centre 7200 RPM for €239

Anyone have any experience of either of these or can advise on which is better. Is cache size important? Are these things noisy? Are they easy to set up? Will my PC recognise the external drive easily? Any other issues I need to consider?

    Any help would be appreciated.

I have something similar to the WD one you have mentioned, 250GB and minus the card reader that is present on the Dual Option Media Centre.

Cache size is pretty important, it's not that noisy, there is no set-up involved, unless you are on WIN98 or want to use the included back-up software, which I do, but it is kinda awkward to use.

Windows XP should recognise the drive straight away.

Don't know about the Maxtor drive, but WD drives have a good record of reliability.

id recommend buying the case and drive separately,
even from komplett you could save 60-70 euro.

external drives are all just internal drives in a case,
at least if you buy the case separate you can replace it with newer drives if you upgrade.

xp and 2000 will detect right away,
    98 will need drivers.
