Problem playing DVDs - Please help

I'm having problems watching DVDs on a brand new laptop.

It worked fine initially, I was able to watch DVDs via the ACER Arcade software that came pre-installed.

Last night I installed Winamp, PowerDVD 4.0, Real Player v. 10, and Firefox 1.06.

Now, when I try to watch a DVD in any player the programme crashes, saying it has encountered an error and needs to close. I have tried watching it in PowerDVD, Windows Media Player, Real Player and the Acer Arcade software and I get the same result each time.

I have tried a 'System Restore' but it has not made any difference.

I have also tried uninstalling Real Player and Power DVD, again making no difference.

I have a Slimtype DVDRW SOSW-8335. In device manager it says This Device is working properly. I checked to see if there were later drivers available on the System CD that came with the laptop but it was unable to find any improvement on the current drivers.

The driver files associated with the DVD/RW are:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\cdrom.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\imapi.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\NTIDrvr.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\pfc.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\redbook.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\UBHelper.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\storprop.dll

The DVD player can read data DVDs.

Do you have any ideas on what I could do get it playing DVDs again?

    Thanks!!
    em.

Well what I'd do first of all is download the latest Windows Media Player from microsoft.com since there's a good chance it'll overwrite any codecs or misc .dll's that may have been f*cked up previously by other programs.
I'd try re-installing PowerDVD for the same reason... but make sure you test the dvd playback after installing each program so you can keep track of what fixes/breaks it.

before i do what donkey recommends id uninstall any media related stuff on the pc,
multtiple playes / codec packs anything.

then download the latest version of powerdvd [v6 is out now]
and try that before isntalling wmp10
which is oversized and overfeatured imo

Mih... yeah it's clumsy bloatware, but like installing a new version of IE, it has a knack for overwriting core files with its own... which is a good thing in this situation.
Personally I use RealAlternative and the included Media Player Classic... ahh sweet control :D
