    hi there,

I was wondering if anyone could advise me on what type of guitar would be best for a first time learner... I'm really interested in learning but I haven't clue what to start off with.

    Any advise?

i'd stay away from nylon strings, but that's what most people start with. easier on the fingers. there are lots of really good guitars starting around €300. whatever you get make sure the action is ok (strings should be close to the fret board - means you don't have to press so hard), and try to get a set of light guage teflon strings (easier on the fingers!). if you know someone who plays ask them along to help you pick.
if you're in/near dublin there's a really helpful bloke in a store in town. no b/s and i'm sure he'd point you in the right direction. pm me if you want to know the store.

I started out on my Dad's old spanish guitar. Massively wide neck but easy on the fingers.

My 2 cents would be :

    (a) don't rush into buying. Try some out - bring a mate who knows a little. I did (rush) and didn't (bring someone who knew their ar*e from their elbow)

    (b) don't buy in Ireland if you can help it - I was roasted on my first. Find what you want then order from an online store. Maybe think secondhand? There's lots of beginners who buy a decent guitar then give up after a few months. They just want shot of it.

    (c) personally I found the electric much easier and rewarding until I got a bit better. Acostic steel strings will cut the bejaysus out of your fingers for the first little while. Saying all that, if you go electric, you need an amp. Then a few pedals. Then maybe a bigger, better amp. Then...you get the picture!

    Good luck!

If you've never played guitar before, go in with someone who knows a bit about guitars. I did, and I got a sweet acoustic which I'm still using to this day.

Is it easy enough to get the hang of playing?
