if its a dell the cd drive usually slots in and out completely,
there should be a screw and a push button on the bottom,

button moves when the screw is released type thingy.
remove the drive and replace - check ebay...

other makes im not sure, post up details,
but if you snapped the cd drive tray i dont think its gonna be fixable-
    not cheaply anyway

Reminds me of when I was using my dad's laptop - was listening to music on my headphones, stepped on wire, stood up, & broke the headphone jack to ****. Was too scared to tell him & he still hasn't noticed like 2 years later

Tho back on topic, I agree that replacing the drive is a good option, or you could admit it to him & offer to take it in for repairs. Honesty is the best policy really, that way it'll be fixed & you don't have to worry about trying to cover up while it's away for repairs.

    Looks shagged to me.

Best bet is to eBay a replacement... should be fairly cheap, and you have till September...

Don't know about repairing but the Dell i510m is easy to replace. There is a button on the drive (side of laptop) that you push, the button will pop out and you can just pull the entire drive out to slot in a new one.

If your dad is cool about owning up to it then it will be covered under company insurance and I wouldn't worry about it. Stuff like that happens with things that are used.
It's not like someone was messing with it or playing football with it , it was being used for its normal purpose. If however your dad is flipping out and refusing to take the "blame" than pay for a replacement, personally I would not let it bother me too much.

It would be a replacement part, like I say if he doesn't hit the roof and is logical about it then it is covered by insurance and he can just claim it was an accident. IT depts deal with this type of thing all the time and nothing will be said.
A smaller company might have a different outlook on it as their budgets tend to be tighter but as said, dont worry, once you can deal with your dad and bring him around to admitting it then there should be no hassle.

Jaysus man, no need for panic.

    1. Shell out for a replacement, unslot broken drive, fire in new drive, noone's any the wiser. Unless it was a DVD-RW drive...then the insurance options mentioned above would be a better way to go, you just need the nads to tell your Dad what happened.

    2. I'm guessing your dad's work stuff is primarily on the harddrive anyway, so he's not going to kill you anyway.

yeah and if your replacing it with a new drive, remember the plastic surrounding of the drive comes off, this is just an adaptor so that it can fit a dell.

Did you have a look at the Dell site itself?

    CD-Rom Version

    DVD+RW Version

    Bit pricey though.

nah dell are a rip off, its easier to buy the ones from komplett and just swap out the broken drive.
also not forgetting to transfer the adaptor that allows the drive to be poped in and out of the laptop.

nope not hard to replace, theres a screw directly beneath the drive on the underside of the lappy, unscrew that and pop out the other half of the drive thats still in the machine, then buy one of the drives i posted earlier, pop it in and replace the screw

    http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins510m/sm/upgrades.htm#1019383

bottom of the page, you pop out the housing and remove the other part of the drive, the brown stip is part of the drive

edit:// before you buy the drive make sure you can remove the damaged one from the housing, i haven't any hands on experience with the laptop, so i can't be sure but i'd imagine you can remove it from the housing, otherwise dell are a-holes (it looks like there is a screw on one side of the housing, so i'd say you'd have to unscrew that)

you sure it's a dvd-rw - the logo on the pic looks like it says dvd rom/cd rewrite

either way you're better off replacing it with a dvd-rw anyway and it's easy to remove the current drive from the housing. if you're stuck or don't fancy doing it yourself i can do it for you provided you can bring it to me the whole process would take about ten minutes i reckon

    nige

forgot to mention your best bet on the front fitting the new drive would be an nec. I know for that model/casing there was definately an NEC 5100a dvd+rw burner

Are you sure the drive is broken??

It looks like it just came out of the guiderails? If thats so a bit of patience and a long nosed pliers should be all you need.

If you take out the drive first (mind the brown ribbon cable) by pressing in the button in the bottom left right hand corner and pulling you might be able to see what you are dealing with.

If you are lucky all thats is after happing is the silver guide rails on either side have bent a little, and if the motor is put back on and they are bent back you should be right.

Of course you might have broken something else as well, but why not try fixing it first, its not like you have anything to loose.
