Thinking of changing my alfa in a few months for something smaller and quicker, and have been looking at various hot hatches, generally requirements are:

reasonably quick, reaonably reliable, regd in 2000 at the latest if possible and insurable

I have been looking at the following:

    1) Golf 1.8t gti - pros decent image, quick, resale value

cons - hard to get a good un for 10k, thirsty, expensive to insure

    2) Honda civic 1.6 vtec - pros reliable, quick, resale value

cons - chav image, hard to find a nice non chavd example, hard to get a 00, interior

    3) Pug 206 gti - pros quick, insurable, plenty out there, imo handsome

    cons - bit girly? residuals?

What else would you recommend? Seat leon tdi? hard to find any decent leons about s/h (nice alloys etc) Focus (do they do a quick one, havent seen any st170s??)

    Anything else?

if you can find any anywhere that meet the criteria link would be ace :)

Incidently the ST170 is only available since 2002. Here is a nice example though:
    http://www.carzone.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=250555

Again this out of your price range but it's alot of car for the money.

@ Cyrus, out of all of them, i'd have none. The civic for obvious reasons, and both the 206 and MKiv Golf GTi because them particular models did not deserve the GTi badge.

my money would be on the likes of the 306 GTi-6 as mentioned. I remember seeing one advertised on the net only last week located in waterford...I'll see if I can find the site again for ye.

p.s. depending on insurance (which is probably comparible to your list), how about an A3 1.8T? smashing car.

    I got me a 1.4 00' Focus. I am soooo regretting not getting a 1.6 or higher.
Don't get me wrong Its a great car to drive, but it lacks the oomh in the 60 - 100 km/hr range.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,701 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

11k is very steep for a 99 tdi with 90k imo, just my opinion tho

Would you share with us why you'd even consider trading in your 145 bhp Alfa 156 for a Golf, Civic, Peugeot 206 or what not

From your other posts it appears your Alfa is not a lemon, so why the hell get rid of a real car to get something like that?

well im looking for something faster :D, always liked hot hatches so am looking into them atm, i just bore easily and id like to try somethin new :D

also considering a 318is, i reckon the 1.7 golf remapped to 180 bhp would burn the alfa up

since when did the GT TDi (i presume your talking red TDi, when youve stated GT) push out 115BHP? The PD engines in GT TDi spec had 130BHP and later 150BHP with a 6 speed box

The 318is will feel about as quick as the 156.

Škoda Octavia vRS? 180bhp stock, remap to 225. Better yet, Škoda Octavia 4x4, lowered and remapped to 180 - an Audi TT that you can bring the St. Bernard in.

How about a nice Fiat Coupé in Turbo form?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,701 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

never get one for 10k tho :(

fiat coupe is very nice initial indications tho is that insurance could be an issue,

friend used to have a GT TDi, nice car. Reasonable poke and of course bags of torque!

I thought the GT Tdi wasn't available here? I've seen a good few from Northern Ireland but only one Irish reg one which I presumed was just bought up the north.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,479 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I thought the same, did VW sell the GTi here with the TDi engine?

The most powerfull diesel Golf I have seen here is the 150bhp 6 Speed TDI Highline model. Never actually seen a GT TDI listed on VW's website either.

As for the Fiat Coupe I heard they are very expensive to service and require a specialist rather than a back street mechanic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,946 ✭✭✭SouperComputer

hmm not sure where my Friend got his GT TDi. He spent a couple of years in the UK and may have brought it over. Had irish plates on it anyway.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,412 ✭✭✭HashSlinging

The 130bhp Tdi which replaced the 115bhp wasnt introducted until 2001. The TDi diesel range was reappraised at the end of 2001 to consist of 100, 130 and barnstorming 150bhp Pump Duse variant. Ahem the latter apearing in the Seat leon cupra TDi.

If you've got the cash to hand you'd never know what a trip to the UK might throw up for 5k.

How accurate is the ROS site generally - does it tend to put a higher or lower price on the open market selling price? It wasn't too far off for my car...

Pretty good deal. If I weren't getting the impression that Cyrus (for a reason not understood by me) wanted rid of the Alfa, I'd say hang on to your car and chip it if you'd like a bit more oomph

But I did get the impression, so go for the Seat :D

Don't know really but considering that the higher value they put on the car means they make more from you in VRT. At least it is a good ball park figure anyway.
