    BSkyB subscribers climb by 83,000

    BSkyB said its full-year revenues and profits climbed strongly as it added 83,000 subscribers to its dominant pay-TV service in the fourth quarter, in line with expectations.

    Europe's most profitable satellite broadcaster said today profit after tax in the year to June 30th increased 32 per cent to €615 million, with revenues up 11 per cent to €5.86 billion.

    The fourth quarter subscriber gains bring the company's total subscribers to 7.8 million and matched the average analyst estimate.

    Churn, or the percentage of subscribers that leave the company each year, was an annualised 10.5 per cent in the fourth quarter and 10.3 per cent for the full year. The average amount of revenue per subscriber, known as ARPU, was €556.83 in the last quarter.

    BSkyB is more than one-third owned by global media conglomerate News Corp, and is chaired by News Corp boss Rupert Murdoch. His son James is Sky's chief executive.

    cant see how this will be good for the average subscriber as the next thing to get a big push is HDTV. which necessarily int a bad thing but it is not what the average subscriber could afford
