Government planted a tree per family?

A number of years ago(10?) my father mentioned a scheme whereby the Irish government planted a tree for each family. The aim was to promote awareness of the environment, etc. Whenever we drove past a certain wooded area in Tipperary my father would point and comment on how we should one day go and track down our tree which was somewhere in there. Apparently the trees have numbers associated with each family.

I presume that the Tipperary trees are planted in one area, and the other counties have their own plantations.

    My questions:

    - Has anyone ever heard of this?
    - If so, where can I get further info? I want to track down my families tree!
    - Who actually owns the tree? My family or the government? i.e. Can I chop it down to use as a Christmas tree?

So far all I found was lots of info on google re family trees and the following link--> http://www.treecouncil.ie/ which is not too helpful.

I was talking about this with an English and Polish colleague last night. Apparently in Austria the government did something similar, but actually allowed you to plant the tree too (I think Ireland just allocated the saplings / trees per family)

    Anyone any info on this?

    Hey Boss,

    To answer your questions:
    - Yes, still have my cert at home. As far as I remember it was one cert per entry on the electoral register, with the restriction of one per household
    - see Oasis and Millennium Forests website
    - I don't think you do. AFAIK they belong to the State (i.e. all of us) and not to the individual (why would you wnat to cut it down anyways.?)

    HTH

    S.

Thanks Spock, that is what I was looking for alright.

I emailed info@coillte.ie to find out what my tree number is supposed to be.

I don't actually want to chop it down, ... I was merely wondering if it really is our tree or not
