A new amp? Why yes!

I'm thinking about getting a new amp, what I've got currently is a Marshall MG50dfx. I've had it years. I'm becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the overall general crapness, particular in the clean channel as you really have to crank it to get a half decent tone.

I play an Epiphone Sheraton and a PRS Santana through a Big Muff Pi and Morley Vol. Pedal.

Any advice as to what kind of (gigworthy) amp I should get.

I play in an old school rock 'n' roll band. If that's any use to you.

I'm not really interested in tubes. They seem like too much maintainance.
How much do you reckon I could get for my Marshall?

What do you mean too much maintainance? Replace the tubes every couple of years and that's it.

    €100 if you're lucky.

Oh I always thought there was more to it that that.
Only 100 quid? They're 400 new on Thomann..

Well say I was trading it in and buying a new one aswell, would I get more then?
And what do you make of Fender amps?

If the amp's in good condition, a third is generally the value I think.

    Higher end Fenders are good.

It's probably fair to say that no less than 95% of the (professional) albums you own were recorded entirely with valve guitar amps. There have been a handful of famous solidstate amps over the years, but they are few and far between. Solidstate amps are, for the most part, low cost low quality beginner's amps. The maintenance of a valve amp is negligable really given the alternative. :)

Having said that, that doesn't mean to imply that all valve amps are good. There are plenty of mediocre hybrid amps (valve amps with solidstate amplification in one or more stages) and just plain badly made or badly designed all-valve amps.

Care to shed some light on which are the turkeys in the tube amp range then?

The Marshall AVT series are very good amps.

    AVTs are not good amps.
Marshall valve amps tend to be a bit overpriced for what they are.
Fenders will give you a good clear tone.
    Vox's are fantastic.
People on here have talked up the Laney and Peavey valve amps, though I haven't tried them out.
    Orange make good amps too.
Bring your guitar into town and check a few out, then buy off the web for cheaper :)
