Submitting photos to regional newspapers

Just wondering about what the do's and don'ts are regarding
submission of event photos to regional newspapers are.
I know anecdotally that many have some kind of NUJ only
policy. How would I go about finding out which newspapers
    don't.

I'm thinking aloud as I have one or two quirky photos from
a recent country show/festival which might make the cut
for regional publications. I'm conscious of etiquette, though.
Perhaps I should just phone up one of the newspapers and
ask them straight out and perhaps ask them which other
publications accept photos "off the street" so as to speak.

I think you've answered the question yourself. Just ring up the paper concerned and make a nice friendly enquiry about what the process is... Then post your findings back here.

Depends on the editor. There is no one answer. Generally, the more independent the paper, the more likely you're going to get something published. Just chance it, there's nothing to lose. The only thing is that you're not that likely to get paid unless you're in the NUJ.

From my experience they will only be delighted to get them. In fact most regional papers are crying out for unusual stuff. The NUJ stuff doesn't enter the equation. There are no rules like that, and even if there is, on the odd paper, if the normal photographer objects I bet it will be on the grounds of jealousy :D
