intermittent split second lockups

    hey board,

since last weekend my system has been acting funny. i get random split second lockups (mouse will stop responding, music/video will stop playing) the lockups do not coincide with any new hardware/software installs. i've scanned for viruses with avg and norton but no joy. i've been trouble shooting since the weekend and have been getting nowhere. ive been watching what happens at the moment of lockup through the taskmanager and it appears that something is -for a split second - taking up all of my resources. the processor will peak to between 64% and 89% usage.

im using an athlon xp 3000+ with windows xp pro. i know i could do with upgrading power supply (only 350watt at minute) but this has only just occured out of the blue and if it was a dodgy power supply, i dont think it would manifest itself this way ie so quietly. also have adequate cooling and monitors show temperature inside case to be ok. any ideas??????:confused::confused:

What is it? The list should show what the process is called....

    This stinks of spyware.

tmb - its inconclusive. visibly, there is no process thats seriously hogging at the moment the lockup happens. i did have a problem with spyware recently so maybe there is a remnant hiding in my system?? have scanned with multiple programs incl microsoft antispyware, ad-aware 6 etc. not even a boot and scan in safemode finds it if it is spyware/adware/virus

Use PSlist (1) to list your processes, and output the results to a text file (2). Part of the PStools package.... (3)

i know you suggest using pskill.... but what on??? i've been running through the processes and looking them up as i go, im unsure as to whether any of the above are untoward however. i know there are quite a few, i cant ascertain which one is causing the problem though?? has anyone ever seen bad memory manifest this way. ive seen something similar that i put down to memory, this one has me on the hop

download process explorer, a replacement for task manager and see if your getting any hardware interrupts, if so then theres probably some hardware problem, so take anything out of the pc you dont need one at a time till the problem goes away (soundcard, optical drives, extra harddrives etc) and you might be able to track it down to one piece of hardware
