    From TargetShootingIreland.com:
    Team for the GB Junior International
    Friday, 29 July 2005

    The Irish team for the GB Junior International has been announced.

    Back in April the NTSA invited all its junior (under 21) members to take part in a developmental project to put together a team for the GB Junior International which is to be held from 8th to 11th August in Bisley.

    The plan was for any who were interested to make themselves available on 1st May to sign up to the plan.

    The plan consisted of a series of coaching days over the three months with our International coach Barry Dagger and coaches, Raymond Kane, Geoff Cooney and Matt Fox, who have all attended the ISSF Coaching academy, as part of the NTSA's development strategy.

    It was agreed that at the end of the three months training plan those who had shown the most commitment and/or the greatest improvement would travel to the GB Junior International.

    The following have been selected to represent Ireland in;

    Junior Women's Air rifle;
    Cliodhna Russell
    Elizabeth O'Hagan
    Susan Cunningham

    Junior Men Air rifle;
    Damian Fagan
    Shane Flynn
    Mark Lynn
    Jim O'Hagan

    Junior Men Air rifle & Prone rifle;
    Iain Nash

    They will be accompanied by;
    Leslie Fagan (Team Manager),
    Geoff Cooney (Team Coach) and
    Marie Fagan (Liaison officer)

    The NTSA would like to wish all travelling a pleasant and successful trip

    Patrick O'Brien.
    Chairman NTSA.

    So good luck to our juniors, including one of our own boards.ie regulars, bring back some GB gold guys!

    Details from the GB Junior site:
    The 13th Junior International Match organised by the Great Britain Junior Rifle and Pistol Squad takes place on 8th to 11th August at the Lord Roberts Centre, Bisley Camp. The 2005 competition is expected to be the largest ever, with an estimated 125 shooters from six countries taking part.

    The origin of the Match goes back to the first visit to Bisley in 1993 by a team from Oldenburg in Germany. This was a return match, following the visit by the British Juniors to Oldenburg in 1992 when the British team went on tour, combining a match against Oldenburg with subsequent participation at the Deutscher Schützenbund's Junior International at Brunswick. Oldenburg has sent a team to every one of the International Matches held at Bisley: this year they are coming with 15 shooters.

    The largest overseas representation will be the 50 shooters from South Africa, which will include groups representative of or sponsored by the South African Target Rifle Association, the South African Air Rifle Association, the United Schools Sport Association South Africa and Mpumalanga Province.

    The United States of America will be represented by six shooters from Spokane, Washington, most of whom were also at the 2004 Match. The team's visit is organised by the National Guard Marksmanship Training Unit, and this will be the fourth year that a team has been brought over by the NGMTU.

    The other two countries, the Republic of Ireland and Denmark, have been participants for even longer. The National Target Shooting Association of Ireland will have a group of about nine shooters, the largest team that they have brought so far.

    The Danish National Shooting Association team is always made up of six shooters. They are the leading shooters at the Danes' Big Shooting Day Competition, and their prize includes a trip to Great Britain to take part in the Junior International and a number of competitions in the NSRA's Bisley Rifle Meeting, which is held the following week.

    The British shooters are those who are members of the Great Britain National Squad and the Junior Development Squad.

    Following the training day on Tuesday 9th August, the matches are spread over three days, with rifle and pistol events taking place each day.

    The timetable is here.

    And here's the blurb on our team:
    During the first few years of the Junior International Matches at Bisley some shooting was also arranged for the adults of the visiting teams. In 1994 and 1995 an invitation to take part was also issued to some senior shooters from the Republic of Ireland, who were being coached at the time by Barry Dagger.

    The contact with the National Target Shooting Association of Ireland has been maintained and in 2001 the NTSA was able to send its first junior shooter to take part in the International at Bisley.

    A number of Irish shooters and officials have taken part in subsequent matches and have occasionally also been involved in the other two major annual events organised by the Junior Squad - the Easter Training Camp at Bisley and the Spring tour of Germany, including the matches at Oldenburg and Suhl.

    Three of the team, Susan Cunningham, Damian Fagan and Mark Lynn, have already been to Bisley this year, shooting in the British Open Airgun Championships in February.

    Manager Leslie Fagan
    Coach Anthony Cooney
    Chaperone Marie Fagan

    Shooters 6001 Susan Cunningham 6005 Iain Nash
    6002 Damian Fagan 6006 Elizabeth O'Hagan
    6003 Shane Flynn 6007 Jim O'Hagan

    First day's shooting results are up on the web and we've done rather well, though there is also dissappointment; Damien Fagan went into the finals a point ahead in first place, but had a bad finals and lost out on the medals by 2.1 points :( He's going to be gutted by that. However, he now qualifies (having shot 577, 7 points over the Minimum Qualifying Score for the Olympics) for a carding grant, which means that he'll be able to attend more competitions, get more help with physiological and psychological training from the National Coaching and Training Center, as well as from the local Gym in Wilkinstown (who kindly extend free use of their facilities to carded athletes) and that should give him an excellent chance to put in a better performance next time, in the British Open Championships in Feburary next year.

    Also, Susan Cunningham's match is not until tomorrow, and we're expecting that she will do equally well, if not better.

    And the other members of the squad shot at about the levels we were hoping for, and will now have been exposed to what international competition is like, and hopefully will be hooked on it :D

    The team did not fare so well in the teams category, but we weren't expecting to; our developmental male juniors aren't quite ready for a competitive trip just yet, though they show much promise. The ladies' team may well do better, however we're not fussed about it, as with the exceptions of Damien and Susan we weren't expecting top placings from the Juniors yet. (This won't hold for Bisley in Feburary, guys!).

    And most of the second day's shooting results are now up and we've done well again. Susan didn't finish quite as high as I thought she would, joint third going into the final on 380 (ex 400), which is five points over the Minimum Qualifying Standard and thus gets her a carding grant as well (that's two in one trip! :D ), but is still remarkable for a junior. Expect Big Things in the future from that young lady. The other lady juniors didn't quite shoot at their full potential, about three or four points low in each ten-shot series, but this was their first time abroad ever, and we sortof expected that (that's why this is a developmental trip, after all). Again, wait till next febuary and the competitive trip for the British Open!

    One more match tomorrow, with one of our own regular posters here shooting, so keep watching...

    And the final results are in. There were three matches of interest today, the Air Rifle Grand Prix matches for the Junior Men and Junior Women, and the Prone Smallbore match for the Junior Men.

    The Air Rifle Grand Prix matches saw our juniors doing quite well; Susan Cunningham improved on her PB of 380 from yesterday to put in a 382, but was pipped for the bronze medal by one point :( However, that's two MQS scores in two consecutive days, which is an amazing feat for a junior who's only been shooting for one year! Elizabeth O'Hagan dropped three points from her PB yesterday of 364 to 361; an exceptional performance on her first trip to Bisley, especially given the 30-degree temperatures on the range, which everyone's been subjected to! And Cliodhna Russel's 347 is ten points down on yesterday's 357, but it's a good thing to learn how much these matches take it out of you!

    The Junior Men's air rifle Grand Prix match also saw an MQS score from Damien Fagan on 570, but finishing further down the field today than yesterday in sixth place; still good enough to make the finals and it definitely copper-fastens the carding grants, but not what he's capable of (Damien's got a 580 in him at the moment, and that's only after a year of competitive training). But he's learnt a great deal from this trip, so again, Expect Big Things in the future from this man!

    Shane Flynn managed to not just maintain his score, but increase it by one from 543 to 544, and not to be outdone, Marc Lynn improved from a 523 to a 536! And yes, Jim O'Hagan did slip a bit, but at his first international match ever and only six months into competitive shooting at a level that used to take several years to get to!

    One thing's for sure; those medals in the British Open are definitely in trouble :D

    And in the Men's Prone Smallbore match, Iain Nash did quite well, posting a 562 in what is his third ever smallbore match at 50m, and only four months or so after he started shooting smallbore competitively! Not quite at MQS level yet, but give him a year and some experience on a 50m range, and watch what happens!

    All told then, this trip has to be counted as a wonderful success. Eight juniors trained for some months on a regular basis, and while it wasn't perfect when we started, we've learnt what not to do and what we have to do next time and what worked really well this time and so on; Four MQS scores shot by two shooters, and thus two carding grants qualified for; and a first place, two third places and more PBs than you can shake a stick at. As well as eight junior shooters now hooked on competitive shooting! A big well done is definitely needed and a thank-you to the hard work put in both during this project and before it by Geoff Cooney, Matt Fox, Leslie Fagan and Paul Cunningham of Wilkinstown who supported the shooters through thick and thin; and further thanks are due to those in the NTSA who worked hard on this project as well, like Ray Kane who did an excellent job on the physical coaching and who sorted out some pretty serious points on the logistical planning for the trip.

    Now this is what shooting's all about, folks! (for me at least!)

    The team got back from Bisley this evening:

    And following the spontaneous welcome home from the passers-by in the arrivals hall (literally, dozens of people standing round waiting for family or friends to get in off the plane saw the team walking out in uniform and being given flowers and they started applauding, which was downright lovely to watch :) ), there's time for a quick group hug before the team splits up to head off home to some well-deserved sleep!
