Skoda more reliable than Land Rover or BMW!

    Very surprised to see Audi and Saab below Alfa Romeo's.

    SKODAS have the fewest breakdowns of all European cars, a major new survey reveals.

    But Japanese makes are the most reliable while Land Rover's costly four-wheel drives break down more often than other, cheaper car makes, the survey found.

    Almost half of the cars made by the British firm needed repairs in the past two years - the poorest record of 30 marques on the road.

    The figures are published by What Car? magazine and the Warranty Direct company.

    The most unreliable Land Rovers were Freelanders built between 1997 and 2000, which had a breakdown rate of 55pc.

    Overall, Land Rover's failure rate was 45pc, compared with Rover (40pc) and Ford (36pc).

    In contrast, the best of the Japanese cars fared very well: just 9pc of Hondas needed repairs, while Mazda and Toyota performed impressively.

    Steve Fowler, group editor for What Car?, said the results, based on warranties for 31,000 cars, were a letdown for Land Rover.

    Land Rover was bought from BMW by Ford for more than £1bn (€1.5bn) in 2000.

    Mr Fowler added: "We do hear that they have improved and that the latest models have got a lot better. Land Rovers are actually used for the purpose for which they were made - off the road - and cars used in that manner are more likely to go wrong than ones used for the school run." Land Rover reserved comment until today.

    Other manufacturers with a better overall reliability record had some models that were even worse than the Freelander.

    Early versions of the Renault Espace had a 69pc breakdown rate, while there were faults with early versions of the Saab 9000 and BMW 7 series and continuing problems with the Audi TT. Porsches were the most expensive to repair.

    The manufacturers and the percentage frequency of their repairs:
    1. Honda 9.9;
    2. Mazda 10.7;
    3. Toyota 12.9;
    4. Nissan 13.3;
    5. Lexus 15.1;
    6. Hyundai 16.2;
    7. Mitsubishi 17.0;
    8. Daewoo 21.9;
    9. Skoda 25.2;
    10. Mercedes-Benz 25.6;
    11. Subaru 26.3;
    12. Seat 27.6;
    13. Volvo 28.5;
    14. Porsche 29.6;
    15. Volkswagen 30.1;
    16. Peugeot 30.8;
    17. BMW 34.0;
    18. Fiat 35.3;
    19. Vauxhall (Opel) 35.9;
    20. Ford 36.4;
    21. Chrysler 37.2;
    22. MG 37.7;
    23. Jaguar 37.9;
    24. Citroen 38.0;
    25. Renault 38.4;
    26. Alfa Romeo 39.4;
    27. Rover 40.3;
    28. Audi 41.2; 29.
    Saab 42.1;
    30. Land Rover 45.4

    Surprisingly good result for Mercedes.

    And look at Fiat right beside BMW - still, at least BMW are a quality luxury brand.

    Interesting to see that the more money you spend on VAG cars, the more prone they are to failure. Skoda->Seat->Volkswagen->Audi.

    Yeah whats the source , is it JD Power , what car etc

    I would however agree with the top 5 , however would have put Lexus up abit further . Audi definitely surprised at , however not that surprised at Saab there highest selling vehicle is just basically a Vectra Sri rebadged and we all know GM can't make reliable cars.

    Skoda are defo reliable as seen in previous surveys with the octavia and fabia performing brilliantlly so not surprised at all , but Merc beating BMW is a turn up for the books as both usually dont rate that hight but BMW always comes out on top.

    More power t'ya but it's not about whhere anyone "would put" any particular make.
    This isn't opinion, ithe results are based on how often these cars have to be repaired.

    Honda Civic is the most reliable car in the world in my opinion but i cant have one because insurance costs means that it is not visable to keep. A really shame. I have an Astra just as good though.

    Hyundai - Cheap and reliable. Might not have the stand high standard that other have but the id have the 2.0l fx coupe any day over a celica 1.8 vvti-l

    Yeah I know how it works just surprised it wasn't further up as Lexus usually beats always beats its parent company toyota . Yeah there is some amazing stat about the honda engines , no v-tec engine has ever failed or something.
