    http://www.ltatum.com/movies/Week22/TOWJanuaryW4.wmv

The above is a Larry Tatum (10th Dan? Kenpo Karate) demonstrating ground fighting defense.

I think that this is absolutely ridiculous though as I understand that he is well respected in Kenpo circles I'd like to hear a plethora of opinions.

    Thanks,

    Colum

Ah good old larry. Thats absolutly bloody comical. The fat blue belt and his overreaction. Larrys mullet. A kenpo master getting his right and left side mixed up. The wierd snapping noise he makes. The fact that anyone could take that whole video seriously.

The same technique, from the prone position!

Personally it seems obvious to me that the blue belt rolls compliently off the instructor.

What i liked though was the fact that he pointed out that there is possibilities to strike up at towards the face and neck. I don't do alot of striking as i am more intrested in BJJ for recreation, but am i right in saying that most of the power in a punch comes from the correct use of body weight? from my experience in doing bjj with strikes allowed it is very hard to strike up with significiant force from the bottom when your on the ground especially when you must also deal with the other persons body weight.

    All and all i dont think that that instructor knows what he is talking about. However i have only been doing bjj for just over 2 and a half years. i have a few questions though;

    Who is larry tatum?
Are the kenpo associations here in ireland affialiated with him?
    Does he do ground techniques?
And do any kenpo schools here teach these techniques shown in the video?

Larry Tatum is a very highly ranked Kenpo instructor. From talking to some Kenpo people who had some of his kata instructional video the guy seems to be a well respected authority in the kenpo world.

I wonder how often he rules the mma circles with this stuff?

Any thoughts from the Kenpo people?

Also beautiful how he confuses prone (face down) with supine (face up) positions.

Larry Tatum would be considered a top dog in the Kenpo world. THE top dog by those in his organisation.

A good deal of the top Irish Kenpoheads are now under Larry.

I very very very much doubt the Irish Larry Tatum Organisation works on its ground game. Anyway, why would they need to? If they find themselves on the ground they'll just apply their stand up techniques in the prone position.

his hairstyle owns you all though

I am surprised at the lack of comments on here by people in this guys organisation.

I know i would be posting in a thread where somebody was questioining the people who i have trained with.

the dude i trained kenpo under hated larry tatum
he was involved in bringing him over for a seminar and said he was pathetic and did somehting ridiculous like 1 demo and refused to teach anything else bar armchair comments.
    he was disgusted with him.
He also said he more or less sold gradings if i remember correctly, and wasnt really that interested in doing them properly...... or maybe that was someone else....hmmmm memories fading fast.... but not fast enough.

I think that the teacher is strong. He has able to throw the fat man off him like a horse.

Yeah Tony but the guy is just cooperating.

No thoughts from any people training in Kenpo?

Is this technique typical of Kenpo techniques?

all upcoming pride and ufc events have been postponed in order to give the fighters a chance to incorporate these techniques into their training. the revolution begins...

Very clearly co-operating, but then I guess thats the norm when trying to perform such techniques for a video clip. Having said that I can't see how that would be effective. I mean I can't imagine myself flipping a guy over while he has me pinned to the ground. (Just my opinion, so please don't send in the troops for a virtual attack).

    Memphis,

To back up your thoughts of that method being bs get a friend of about the same weight on the mats to sit on your chest. Tell him to try all he can to hold you down and see if that or anything like it works.

    Yo Colum
    this is 100% typical
this is exactly the way i trained
this is exactly the way my 'grandmaster' taught
    that is pure kenpo man

and like i say even among *certain* kenpo circles the man was highly disrespected.

ridiculous way of trainging isnt it????????

Bruce Lee once said the only good thing that came from kung fu was rapid boxing... well the only good thing to come from hawaiian/American Kenpo is eye strikes...............IMO

    John,

define what you mean by troll. I think that vid was posted on ucdsu not here. I dont remember it being here.

My question was to the Kenpo people extolling its virtues? I wanted to know how they could reconcile dirge like that from someone that is sooooo respected in kenpo circles. I was even wondering if they would justify it.

    Their silence speaks volumes.

So no it was not a troll.

It was a "whats the story with this? I think its ridiculous. Do you take this guy seriously?"

As in a lot of organisations, there's a lot of bitching and politicking that goes on. With no overriding mission statement or higher authority to answer to (as in IOC affiliated sports) groups like TKD and Kenpo tend to split, and sometimes there's bitterness added to that.

When I said Troll I meant that the thread was solely posted purely to try and deride Kempo practicioners. The reason I thought that it was a troll is because you know two people who both hold black belts in Kempo (kenpo) Colm and JK , I accept that the cynic in me underestimated your thirst for knowledge.

I think that the Kempo people not knowing any better would assume that this is the way to go , I never really questioned what I was thought in Wado Ryu even as a Black Belt, it was only when I attended UCD and I was exposed to Colm O Reilly and the SBG ethos that I began to question training techniques and Methodolgy.
I'm sure that in your aikido days the situation may have been similar for yourself ?

I think your correct about the video being on the UCD board again I stand corrected. Lastly sorry to hear you will going away from the club in UCD for 2 yrs I for one will miss your enthuasiasm !

    Just saw this thread.

When I saw the guy on top of him, I was thinking, okay, so now he's going to secure the mount and start punchin. But, alas, he stays off him.

    Can I tell an anecdote?
    Well I will anyway....
I was yapping to a boxer one day about MA and stuff and he said the following (he's nothing to do with any MA or SD circles):
"All that pressure point and self defence stuff is for fat blokes who are too lazy to train", and followed it up with "c'mon now, when was the last time you saw an athletic looking bloke doing that stuff".

I just thought of that when the, ahem, portly gentleman was sitting on our Larry. :)

But are you fat because you train with pp's? :D:D

I couldn't resist that! Better put in a few more smiliey faces to make sure you know I'm joking! :D:D

I was just relating an anecdote Paul. Tell you what though, I'll try to get the man himself on to qualify his statement ;) . He was on here before so I'm sure he'll come on to argue again.

From my point of view a lot of people train in certain ways because they want a quick fix self defence solution without the sweat. I've had a few potential students like that who didn't stick around for long.
