Not unexpected news but the number does seem high ... 600!!

Speed cameras are to be operated by private companies in a bid to cut the number of deaths and injuries on the road, it emerged today.

The mobile and fixed cameras will initially be located at up to 600 locations nationwide, with some publicly displayed and others hidden.

A report published today recommended their use to increase compliance with speed limits and to reduce speeds at locations with a history of frequent accidents.

It said the speed camera locations should be identified by the Gardai and the National Roads Authority to achieve the aim of the saving lives rather than increasing revenue collection.

Transport Minister Martin Cullen said the decision to privatise the operation of speed cameras was a key part of the Government’s 2004-2006 Road Safety Strategy.

“In proceeding to legislation for privatised speed cameras, our objectives are clear. If we are to save lives and reduce injuries, speed cameras must be located at accident blackspots and overall operational responsibility must rest with the Gardaí.”

The report also recommended that there should be more speed checks at weekends than on weekdays and more checks between midnight and 3am than at other times. Around 50% of speed checks will be carried out on national and non-national roads, with less than 3% on motorways and dual carriageways.

Justice Minister Michael McDowell will being the tendering process to select the private companies for the project and legislation will be introduced in the Dáil in the autumn.

“As well as making a significant contribution to road safety, this initiative will release Garda resources to concentrate their enforcement efforts on other motoring offences which cause death and destruction on our roads such as drink driving,” said Mr McDowell.

We're in the money, we're in the money.

Somebody's going to be laughing all the way to the bank.

Speed cameras do make people slow down, on the perfectly straight stretches of road the camera needs to operate. Then they put the boot down through the poorly constructed (with cheap materials), badly maintained (correction: unmaintained) corners.

Every year theres loads more speed cameras and what effect do they have other than generating revenue for our goverment.

I very rarely exceed the posted speed limits but I dislike speed cameras because everyone, even the people travelling 10km/h under the limit slam on the brakes when ever they get near them.

maybe theyre going to put them all outside schools?

do we even have 600 accident blackspots where it can be shown that increased adherence to speed limits will reduce fatalities?
