Ok I was browsing and clicked on a link for mp3's right. When I clicked on it a basic web page came up saying I unlwafully accessed a server right, and that my details have been reported to the local authorities and my ISP. Then it listed a tracert on my Ip address and then a whois. Now do you guys think this is serious or bull please give me your advice I am going out of my mind with worry.

    bull.

In my opinion: Complete bull. Don't worry at all about it.
Any website will know your IP and can do a tracert online for you. Nothing unusual there. They make it sound all techy just to frighten you

I hope so guys thank you for calming my nerves a bit because I have been bricking myself since it happened. It was the most basic of websites like just basic text you know like.

What exactly would they have on you? If it was a fake link did they log that you tried but were unsuccessful in downloading something? Wouldn't work, intent would not be enough to prosecute in a case like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,977 ✭✭✭mp3guy

on the other hand, forward the link too all your friends, then they'll all freak out

Please tell me your joking I am really worried tbh John.

    willem,
    john is joking with you.

    you havent done anything wrong,
they supplied the link so any attempt to access the server was initiated by them,
ie, they made the address publicly available.
like posting your phone number on boards and then giving out if weirdoes ring you.

since the link didnt work i presume the mp3 didnt download either,
so if your worried about that, you also havent done anything wrong as "intent to download an mp3" isnt a crime, yet ;)

every site you go to has your ip so they havent hacked you to get that info.

noting to worry about at all

the garda have better things to be doing than running around kicking in doors screaming who downloaded music ilegally (in their best bogger accent)

1). They can't prosecute unless you actually did something, we are not yet in a state where thought crimes are illegal. Now, if you were in America...

2). Advertising such a 'service' is likened to entrapment, except without cause or warrent, thus illegal.

3). Any website, server, or other computer can do the same with only minor knowlege and a server/program script. There is nothing special about it.

4). Websites cannot contact your local police or copyright protection agency without a dictionary of locales, contact details, etc. to setup a system would take hundreds of man hours and tbh would not reap the returns other means could.

5). You could only be done for possession of a counterfiet product, in most cases this would lead to nothing. The Garda aren't idiots.

6). Even if you were to distribute the product, you are only succeptable to licensing fees which are in action. At current RIAA charge 0.0007 per 'performance', and charge late fees n' such - basically, it would cost them a hell of a lot more to get you than its worth.

all in all, dont worry :D

Wouldn't worry about it, similar ****'s happened to me, they are just trying to look scary.
    I got freaked out...Time passed...Nothing happened...still a free man (this was when I was like 14!).
I mean, maybe we're both being watched from the shadows, but then I'd feel flattered for the attention :D

I wouldn't worry the worst they could have done would be to install somthing like "magic lantern" or use "carnivore" against you.

anyone ever see that website with the big red button saying that they thrust there users so much that the button would delete the whole website if pushed. When you pushed it it refreshed the page but logged your ip and brought up a clone DNS or 404 message pretty convincing stuff first time round.
