Unusual guitar tuner...

I was playing a gig a while back & due to the circumstances had to use the amp of another bassist from the band who'd played before my band. I noticed this amp had a kind of red striplight near the bottom under the speaker which lit when I played & responded to the signal. When I was tuning between songs I realised it was a tuner - the intensity of the light varied with the rate of the "beats" or phasing (for want of a better word) when I played two similar notes, ie while relative-tuning. So the closer I got to the correct frequency the steadier the beam of light; the further I got, the more & the faster it dimmed & brightened.

Does anyone know what this kind of tuner is called? It was brilliant as I find it hard to see the little displays of regular tuners. If I could find it in a pedal it'd be perfect. I've been fishing about on google but to no avail...

Thanks to anyone who can help :)

it wasnt a fender rumble bass amp by any chance?

Yeah, having googled it it was a Rumble. According to the specs it just responds to the rhythm of your playing as opposed to being a tuner (I feel like an idiot :S) but I guess that means it'd respond to the beats while tuning. First gadget of its type I've ever seen.

On a related note, isn't this the strangest tuner:http://www.strobotron.com/index.html

I think I'll get one for the novelty, wonder how well it works. Pity the frequencies are fixed so you can't tune so accurately to alternative tunings but strobe tuners are meant to be way more accurate than the normal €5 type I already have (which died, hence all this research into tuners lately :P). They sell wee pouches to put them in too for less than a fiver, apparently.

It's only about €28, shipping for such a tiny thing would only make it slightly more.

Just get a Boss TU-2 . Chances are, if you play with a band, everyone else will have them. They're all calibrated the same (something to be aware of in a band situation) and will last a lifetime's worth of gigging and general knocking around.

me too essential to an effects loop as both a quality tuner and a power supply for the rest of your 9v pedals

    K I ordered the TU-2 today from thomann, hope you're right :p

Still, the novelty of the strobopick is very tempting... :D

them´s are good tuners, and so are the built in tuners on any of Boss´s floor pedals, the GT-6 for example... same thing i guess, the one difference being you can adjust the frequency of the tuner, i don´t know why this would be necessary, but it can be done, if one were so inclined
