You probably don't have 48bit LBA enabled in your registry. Windows xp doesn't by default.
You running windows xp/2000? Have a look here http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/1115/

Ive just installed Intel® Application Accelerator and it seems to have done the trick.. can see 372.61GB now..... i know you loose a bit out of the total size of the hard drive but shouldnt i get a bit more than this?

Na 370Gb sounds about right. Dont know that that program did but only XPpro supports over 127GB

    nah,
youll lose about 4.5 gigs per 50gig cos of the maths.
they measure 1gig as a 1000kbytes in these terms,
    but really 1gig =1024kbytes

    i think ;)

    Great! all sorted then.. :)

Heres wat that program does.... (and it is XP pro by the way)

You can use the Intel® Application Accelerator to access the full capacity of hard drives that are larger than 137GB on supported Intel® chipsets with a supported operating system. The Intel Application Accelerator supports hard drives that are greater than 137GB -- which is also referred to as 48-bit logical block addressing (LBA).

by the way ... how the hell do you partition a 400GB drive! :) thats a lot of space!

    im thinking maybe 3 * 100GB and 1*72GB... :)

When you go to format the drive you should be able to set up the partitions.

Right click My Computer, select Manage. This should open Computer Management. The click storage, this should open a drop down menu. Click on Disk Management. On the right hand side you should be able to see all the drives. Go to the new one, right click on it and select format. From there it should let you set up the partitions.

Thanks Mak... but i didnt actually mean HOW do you do it.... :) was just saying i never had to split a drive this big before and had to think about the size and number of partitions...

just has them formatting now... I have noticed that the hard drive is now quite hot ... maybe because its formatting and doing alot of work at the mo?

Silly question perhaps but can you only use the Intel® Application Accelerator on PC's using Intel chips?

I use AMD and have a similar problem. 200GB only seen as 126.

well i would imagine so.. :) but you can read more about it here

    http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/iaa/

and there is also some good reading about large drive support on the maxtor site here:

XP SP1 and SP2 support greater than 127gig drives by default, so either upgrade to them from regular XP, or if formatting, slipstream the formatting cd to include the service packs (google for nLite for doing this).
