Carpet shampoo

So we've inherited a carpet cleaner (Bissell 1950 I think) and we're wondering were to get some carpet shampoo. Can anyone recommend an outlet (south west Dublin) or any tips about using one of these beasts. Aside from trying a discrete patch to ensure that things are cool.
