Shopping? Don't take the bus .... Take The DuSCAR

The DuSCAR (An Dúscar) is The Dublin Shopping Centre Access Route. This route will bring you to and from all of Dublin's major recreation / shopping centres.

The following tour will highlight the best centres and outline the uniqueness of each location. I hope this will be of some value.

We begin our tour on the M11 at Bray. Follow signs for M50. This is what the locals call The DuSCAR. You will pass the soon to be opened Carrickmines Plaza. This new and soon to be vibrant location is quite unique in that it actually has it's very own access from the The DuSCAR, making it a very desirable location to spend those boring hours with the kids instead of taking them to the zoo or the local park. As you enter the new complex you will be welcomed by everyone's favourite home improvement megamart Woodie's DIY.

Next on the tour is the the city's newest and most famous shopping Mecca, the Dundrum Town Centre. Don't get confused here, take the exit from The DuSCAR at Sandyford and then follow the sign at the roundabout for Ballinteer. This will take you to another roundabout where you should turn right in the direction of Dundrum. After several more roundabouts, the Dundrum Town Centre will magically appear in the form of a Tesco petrol station. At this location they actually charge for shopping there by way of a penal hourly car parking charge. This is paid into a machine before returning to your car. However it's uniqueness is that inexpensive petrol is available and there are several foreign retailers with an exclusive presence in Dundrum. It's advisable to fill up your car here and therefore negate the parking charge.

After getting back onto The DuSCAR, you will see the exit for the N81 and Tallaght. Exit here and follow signs for Tallaght and Blessington. After one roundabout and several sets of traffic lights you'll see a building on the right called The Plaza Hotel. Behind this lies The Square, a strange shaped building with a glass pyramid on top (hence the name of the centre). This was in fact The DuSCAR's first emporium and it's uniqueness lies in the fact that it was built on the wrong side of the city. This will become apparent when you enter the building and see teenagers with babies in buggies and their tracksuit wearing "partnurs" partaking in the recently imported practice of "hangin out at the mall". Be aware that the security personnel in The Square run quite quickly and don't give warnings as they knock over your kids while attempting to apprehend the perpetrator in the baseball cap. The perp will generally leave a trail of costume jewellery and the latest casual attire from JJB and Champion Sports.

Continuing our tour of The DuSCAR - three junctions north of the N81 is the approach to Liffey Valley Shopping Centre. Exit The DuSCAR at the N4 for Lucan / Palmerstown and Galway / Sligo and keep in the left lane. The driveway into the sprawling shopopilous begins on the left. For easy access keep left until you see the centre ahead surrounded by a MotorMall to the left and several outbuildings selling flower pots, computers and the mandatory DIY superstore. This one is presented by the giant British corporation B&Q. You can do it. However there is an Irish offering in the form of Atlantic Homecare. The uniqueness of Liffey Valley is that while it is located next to a sprawl of social housing, the developers didn't put a supermarket in it. Well actually, they just weren't allowed. It seems a supermarket in this location would have created something called traffic congestion.

The next loaction is the wonderful Blanchardstown Shopping Centre, commonly know as Blanchardstown or simply Blanch. If you access Blanch from the southside you will be immediately aware of it's uniqueness. You have to pay to get in. The gates to the centre are conveniently placed on The DuSCAR and the cost for a car (irrespective of the number of occupants) is a mind boggling 1 euro and 80 cents. This incredible good value is mirrored in the centre itself with a vast array of supermarkets and department stores. (If you travel from a northerly direction access to Blanch is free, however you will have to pay to get out.) Take the exit after the gates and follow the road until you see the signs.

Finally on the tour is The Pavilions in Swords. Unique in that it's not actually on The DuSCAR but as the ad pointed out its convenient access, we decided to include it. Take the last exit posted Airport and Belfast and stay in the left lane. Veer left in the direction of the airport and take the 3rd exit at the roundabout (turn right). The Pavilions in Swords is the finest shopping location in north County Dublin and so a special access road was provided. Please refrain from blinking along this road or you'll miss it.

That concludes our tour of The DuSCAR. We hope you'll visit with us soon.

The DuSCAR is proudly brought to you by Fingal County Council, South Dublin County Council, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, the National Roads Authority and An Bord Pleanála
