Need help...Recovering files

    Im just after re-instaling windows on a mates pc but lost some of his family pictures... He had two partitions, one for backup etc but his pics were not on it and i only found that out after i re-installed.....
    Is there any way i can recover these files back...they appear to be pretty important to him.

    Thanks for that...i was just looking at a site for a programme that recovers data and i seen this...

    "Note:

    File are not recoverable if overwritten with other data, or its header in the root folder is overwritten or damaged. Usually it happens when you write something onto the drive where deleted file is located."

    does this apply to re-instaling windows over the old stuff..
