Tiler did a botch job

A few months ago I got a tiler in from Buy and Sell to tile my bathroom.
Before the job was complete (up to just above the wiindow and doors) my Mum paid him! When he came back to finish the job he rushed the end of it.
The result is that there is :

No plastic joins between tiles corners - might be able to fix this without removing the tiles.

The tiles above the door are really bad becuase the deal was that he would get the tiles - and there was no tiles left in B & Q so he used slightly different colour - which is noticeable. To top it off - the join is bad and a big lump of grout where you cannot line up the tiles. not sure what can be done to rectify this.

Above the window - again no plasic joiner and he did not remove the blind - just tiled around it.

He was suppposed to replace the skirting boards but looks like he used a hacksaw - very crooked and they need to be stripped and redone

I'm looking for someone who can fix this up - or who can give some advise. Can post some pictures on Monday.

I tried getting the guy to come back to fix this up but he said "I'll ring you back" and never did. I'd rather not have to redo this as it cost me @ 1000 euros. It is a cardinal mistake to pay someone before the job is complete!!

    Hi,

"Plastic Joins" - Do you mean tile edge trims for where the tiles meet an external corner for example at the corner between a wall and a window-ope etc?

    Regarding the tiler:
    1) Is he a real tradesman or a just a mobile-number?
    2) Has he an ad in the Golden Pages
    3) Does he have a landline number and an address?

I would advise calling him again and telling him that you will bring the issue to the small claims court to recoup your money unless he puts the job right or refunds the money and see how he reacts...

Lets know how you get on...

It was just an ad in the Buy and Sell. It is way to late at this stage to get back to him. I just had a mobile number for him. The first few days of work he did was excellent - completely flawless. It was only when he was paid that he botched the end - motivation probably went belly up. He was a Latvian guy - seemed pretty nice and decent initially but when he didn't call back after telling me he would - after saying the finish was sub standard.

I do have a mobile number for him still - would prefer just to fix it myself though

    Hi Fredser,

The only item on your list I would have some concern about is an ad in Golden Pages, they will accept an ad from anyone using any name and contact number that is why I made the very informed decision not to advertise with them until they become "Consumer Friendly" and check out who they are allowing to advertise.

    Hi bubby,

I'm not sure if you can get a trim to fit in between the tiles now the adhesive has had a lot of time to set, maybe trimming the back off the strip and trying to bond the bullnose finish to the ends may help.

As for the different colours you can get paint for ceramic tiles however I'm not sure how nice it is as a finish but at least the whole bathroom would be the same colour.

Take a look around the big stores like B&Q you may find a self adhesive border that can be fitted where the bad joint is and basically cover it up.

Short of saying start the job again that's about the best I can think of at the moment, I hope your experience doesn't leave a sour taste where all trades men and women are concerned.

    Hi Pete,
Thanks a million for taking the time to post a reply to this. You have given me some very good ideas. i don't think the bathroom will ever be perfect but these ideas may take the edge off it.

Fact is, this guy did an exceptional job on 80% of the room. Its a shame, whatever his reasons for rushing the end, time constraints or whatever else. Wish he had said to me at the time to see if I could accomadate instead of slopping the end.

The coloring difference is very slight - I was thinking maybe a darker light in the loo and it might just appear as a shadow. The idea of the border is good.

If there were no trades men and women in this world I would have electrocuted my self - or super glued myself to something a long long time ago ! :) I won't tarnish all with the same brush , like everything, you win some and loose some.

I'll post some pics on Monday - cause these ideas are really appreciated.

having a problem myself with a tiler at the moment, just a rushed botched job but there are holes in the grout, and lumps in the grout in patches, the grout looks graney and grey the guy in the shop appointed the tiler and says he provided ivory grout,

I say grey he says ivory we are at a standstill but he will not come to inspect the work. that his nominated person has done.

I don't really want to rush to court but have gone 8 days at this stage without the use of my bathroom

    mod Edit
Hi barbaraG, Welcome to boards.ie I see this is only your second post, but the post you replied to is nearly 9 years old. Generally we don't like to drag old threads like this up, its best to start your own if you have an issue.
