Don't know if this is the right place to post this but...

Can anyone explain to me what iframes are? When I visit certain sites (ie o2.ie) I am told that my browser doesn't support iframes.
So I'm unable to visit some of their pages etc. I have no idea how to make my browser support them or if that's even possible. Any help?

Excuse me for sounding completely thick...but define browser...

is what you are looking through at the moment. Internet Browser. What you use to search the web.
Are you sure it didn't say, "does not support frames" or was if definetely iFrames?

Short for Web browser, a software application used to locate and display Web pages. The two most popular browsers are Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. Both of these are graphical browsers, which means that they can display graphics as well as text. In addition, most modern browsers can present multimedia information, including sound and video, though they require plug-ins for some formats.

The browser is the program/application you use to view pages on the internet, if you are using windows and haven't changed any settings or installed any new programs it is more than likely Internet Explorer that you are using. Internet Explorer is iframes compatible, but it is possible you have an old version which might not be compatible...

Either way, it should have the name of the browser you are using, at the very top of the browser window, for example right now mine says "Reply to Topic - boards.ie/vbulletin - Mozilla Firefox". My browser being Mozilla Firefox.

    Hope that helps (hth)

This also sounds silly, but my brother in law calls it "E" because of the internet explorer icon. :)

What graveyard did you dig that definition out of?

No worries. Browser is basically what you use to look at the internet. For example, internet explorer is a browser. The thing that pops up when you click the little blue E. :P ok, maybe you need to update it.. or change settigns

    here's how to fix it..

Click Tools --> internet Options --> Security --> internet Zone --> Custom Level --> Miscellaneous --> Launch programs and files in an IFRAME... if the box is ticket there's ur problem..

iFrames are like a little web page within a webpage. If you're using Internet Explorer then you shouldn't be havign any problems.

    Yep was definitely iframes.
Oh right, then I use Microsoft Internet Explorer. And i never usually have any problems displaying videos or sounds...
I just checked o2.ie again and as soon as I clicked on webtext it told be that my browser doesn't support iframes, which is what has always been happening since this problem started (I used to be able to use the site no problem), but now it happens when I try to log in as well.

check what version of internet explorer you're using, I think it needs to be at least version 5 to use iFrames. You can check the version by clicking on 'Help' and then 'About Internet Explorer'

    In your Browser
Click the Tools menu (at the top)->Internet Options-
Then click Delete cookies -> and Delete all offline content
Answer 'Yes' to any questions it asks -
Close your browser - open and try to go to o2.ie

Firefox has to be more popular than Netscape?

    maybe try windowsupdate.com

OK, I tried that, there were 3 options, disable, enable or prompt. Prompt was selected, so I switched it to enable, but it still won't work. Unless I have to resart my computer or something...?

Also, I don't think my browser is a particularly old version, I'm using windows xp, surely the explorer with that would be up to date?

EDIT: Sorry just checked, it's version 6.

Ah to be a woman. 15 replies in less than an hour. Brilliant.

Clearing your cookies, or resetting your security level (near the custom level button described above) or switching to firefox may also work.

Edit: A google suggests trying windows update in tools->windows update. There was some iframe bug in IE.

In fact, switching to firefox should be the only real solution being offered here...

    Sure you would think
but Firefox is new - Netscape ships with lots of linux strains and solaris and has been around for 10 years. I'm sure Firefox has more current downloads

    There's an option under tools->internet options->security->custom level
which is to do with iFrames.

LOL I was trying not to come across as apoor computer illiterate female (which, by the way, I'm sure is quite sexist), but anyhow, it got results!

Back to the main problem, I've tried all the suggestions (thanks btw) but still not working...
Also, I don't think my dad will let me switch browsers, he thinks that anything that goes wrong with the computer MUST be down to me...wonder where he got that idea from...

I can safely say that firefox nails netscape in usage. I was just looking at our global mega corp web stats there. firefox is around 15% of our total hit count. Amazing tbh.

Haha. I wasn't suggesting that. Apologies if you took it that way. I was more slagging the fellas here for jumping to attention. :D

OK I just switched to the firefox thing (my Dad is going to KILL me) but it still says I don't support f***in iframes!!! AARRRGHH all this for a free text message please help!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,934 ✭✭✭egan007

    Switch to Linux :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,485 ✭✭✭✭Khannie

Ok, then it's something blocking iframes. Did you install XP Service Pack 2 recently? Get a new firewall program? Just get broadband? Anything like that?

Don't worry about your dad. Most internet explorer users wont even notice the difference. :)

Oh he'll notice alright! He just came home from work and I mentioned firefox and he started ranting about how he always stuck with internet explorer because of compatability and bugs or somesuch, and I replied with some of the stuff from the firefox website,eg hassel-free downloading, live bookmarks, tabbed browsing etc. He looked at me as though I had 3 heads (I don't usually talk like that) and then guessed that I must already have downloaded it to know so much about it. But he's coming round to the idea!

Anyway, not sure about the service pack thing, it's a poosibility! We do have a REALLY annoying security thing though called McAfee or something but I tried loading the site with the security thing completely disabled, still didn't work...

All you need I.E. for is windows update. Any thing else use Firefox. Firefox supports frames and iframes as does I.E. 4.0 and above, I.E. 6.0 definately supports them. I'd say the problem is at o2.ie's end not yours.

Both of the browsers you are using support both frames and iframes.

Firefox is far superior because of security and also tabbed browsing. I have had the same problem at that site and I know it is not my browser (Firefox).

At this point, this seems a likely candidate. I'd try again on Tuesday (i.e. after the bank holiday. :))

By the way, you can have both firefox and IE on your computer at the same time (even both running at the same time), so you can use firefox and your Dad can use IE. :)

Or you can get an FF extension called IEview....so nay site you want to open in IE is simply a right click
