damn right, im over here in spain at the moment in a pretty large town near malaga and the people here are painfully unfriendly.
when you walk past they just stare.... so i thought give them the nod...stare harder...say hola... still no response. been here 10 days met only 6 nice locals.
cant wait to get back to ireland where everyone at least acknowledges other peoples greetings

Id agree there, except Canada, in Canada they would dive under your feet if there was a puddle shouting "Dont mind me eh!"

Jesus Christ, how moany and whiny is this thread, extra whine for ed6hellsfresh please. You're on fcuking holiday and your posting a thread complaining about the locals not throwing a welcoming party for you.I can just imagine your poor long suffering partner now:
NO, it's not time to go home Ed. YOU are not the ONLY one who has to be up early for work tomorrow, and you KNEW we were going to stay out late when you decided to hang out. Get four hours of sleep like the rest of us, or get a ****ing cab, and NO, you can't have any money for the fare! "But I'm SLEEPY!" TAKE A PERMANENT NAP, ****er! Maybe we won't be able to hear the shrill fluctuations of your griping voice through six feet of tightly packed soil. Whining is fcuking annoying as **** when EIGHT YEAR OLDS do it. Why would you think people will put up with it from an adult?

Ah ed come on that was nothing,a piece of constructive criticism if you like,it doesnt become you acting like one of those meterosexuals that are destroying this beautiful country.Look. Your probably just in stuck up bars to be honest.I meet plenty of friendly people out and about.I normally find you cant turn around without getting into a conversation with people. And im talking about in town. Not Temple Bar.Obviously.Because nobody should ever go there.Hogans,The Globe,Carnival,Anseo and plenty more bars you cant help but talk to people.

anyways, yes i've always found spanish and italians to be rather stand-offish while on holiday.. the friendliest people i've met while abroad was americans and canadians in their respective countries.

Do you know the reason why?

They think we're Brits. Its actually true, most of those countries hate the British holiday makers, if you actually talked to the people and they found out you were Irish I bet they'd actually change their attitude towards you.

Its a strange world, but I've heard many stories of this being the case, and had a couple of experiences of it myself.

Bang on there man - just back from France myself and the people there are a very cold people in general. Even more so if they think you are english, they all chatted away to me though when they found out I was Irish.

It's true, but no one Irish would ever explain the distinction if they were up to badness.

Got the head eaten off us by a waiter in Prague. 'I don't know how you do it in the UK, but in Czech, we tip' (it was really expensive and fairly sh*te).

I didn't particularly feel the need to tell him I was Irish.

Which is probably half the reason the Irish have such a good overseas reputation. We do something good, we tell them we're Irish. We do something bad, we let them assume we're British.

I was Alicante in Spain last year for a week and I found the locals to be complete titwanks to be quite honest. Some of the unfriendliest people I've ever met and I had to constantly keep an eye on my stuff no matter where I was (all of it got robbed on the first day on the beach anyway so there wasn't much to worry about after that)!

When I'm in Germany, people either presume that I'm American because I speak English and then when they hear you speaking the then think you are English. They hate both countries over there. And finally when I tell then I'm Irish it's like you are their long lost cousin and you've just come home after 10 years living on the moon.

Well i am from south africa and came over here with my parents 2years ago. I finished my last year at school here and found it painful :( . The guys my age are just lame. From day 1 they could tell i was ""different"" and wrote me off. I would get the strangest looks.
Then i would go into town, and heaven forbid u arent wearing Nike shoes/pants/jacket/shirt/socks/hat..... list goes on. Why cant they be more open minded, they all look like sheep, wear the exact same things??
I was branded strange and didnt get a word from any1, just very odd looks, and threats as i walked the streets :o , not fun.
I made 1 friend in a full year, and he was a nigerian  . Now i wat you would think, oh he must be a complete dick head, but i dont think i am :) , had loads of friends back home, i will chat to any1, and am very open minded. Why are these irish guys so rude, and unfriendly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,794 ✭✭✭chillywilly

well thats sounds real ****ty, all i can say is there a**holes everywhere....im from dublin, and im just after doing my leaving. There were plenty of non nationals in my class: nigerian, russian, korean, somalian and a guy from mauritius. About 95% of the year got on fine and even became very good friends...the other 5% were d*ickheads/shy people. I suppose you get it everywhere but i hope you wont hold your bad experiences against the rest of us!!:)

Yup, its sad really :( . I saw it going on with a few younger guys to, think they where from italy. People just need to open there minds to new idea's, i think a good start would be to stop wearing exaclty what yr m8 is wearing ( that is seriously driving me demented  ).

You mean people who don't know you sometimes don't pretend to be your friend? That's truly shocking.

I had an interesting coversation with a German girl about this a couple of months back. I just couldn't get past the idea that when you nod or say hello to someone on the street that they would completely blank you or look away. The absolute height of ignorance I thought. She explained that this wasn't the case at all, but that it was just not normal in Germany to salute people you didn't know. In fact, by greeting someone you don't know, you're putting them in an awkward position, as they then think you're someone they've previously met and whose name/face they've now forgotten - hence pretending not to notice your greeting so as to avoid the old "Ah, Mrs...."

I put it to her that it may just be that (northern) Germans were surly, miserable fückers and she conceded that I might have a point.

Generally speaking, a lot of teenagers in a group will dress similarly to conform. Thats pretty normal, and it isn't restricted to Ireland.

Some Irish people are friendly. Some aren't. Generalising and saying Irish people are generally supposed to be "friendly" is like generalising and saying all Americans are stupid.

No way, not to the extent that they do it here. U have to realise they are all shopping at the EXACT same shops, u no the sports stores in every mall  . It is only a matter of days and they are all wearing the same jersey that has just gone on special. England is very similar, they tend to go with what others are wearing.
Coming from a surf town in SA, we all dressed very different for the most part. We would travel far, into the city to find cool little 60's shops, they have the most awsome shirts. Donno if any1 has seen that shop in temple bar, just next to the skate shop, amazing little shop  . Go check it out, got some very nice jackets, and some funky shirts to :)
Another thing is if sum1 where's something ""different"", they should not be looked at as different, its just lame. Why dont they have more individual style.

Im not saying that all irish are unfriendly, i have had many great encounters, and no a few very cool people. I think it is the younger folk, sort of 12 - 18. U would not believe how many times iv walked pass a bunch of youngsters (12-15) they have taken 1 look at my clothes and then proceed to slander me and throw crap at me, its crazy. Not really much i can do, other than smack them and then have them cry to there moms which would be no fun  .
Hate it that when i walk down the street and see a group of guys im nervous and want to turn around :(

Schools in Ireland are strange and oppressive though. Life is far better once you're out, Endurance Man. (from an Irish person who also disliked school and had few friends there)

I agree with simu about school.

I found what others have discovered that if you identify yourself as Irish, you'll be treated way more warmly. I've also found the Spanish to be very friendly. Then again, I wasn't in the tourist areas and I was with locals so that must help. In fact in one nightclub in Madrid the DJ announced that there was a paddy in the place and I ended up with a few free beers. Result :D .

I did find out that they reserve particular mistrust of foreigners of every kind that live in Spain, but never learn the language and ghettoise themselves into enclaves of their own nationalities. The English and the Germans were singled out as major culprits.

I found the same with the French. They can be surly buggers to start with, but if you do get in with them, they'll bend over backwards to help you out.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.
