    DO we believe it?

It'd be good if it happens.

It was on the radio just now (same wording) and I am starting to see in other news.

Read it again. Looks like they are not disbanding just stopping the war and any criminal activities.

    never mind.
the Unionists will only expect actions and not words, and I can't say I blame them.

As pointed out, no mention of policing directly, but an end to the armed struggle and an acceptance of all democratic processes would suggest that SF will be on the board soon enough.
From reading through it, it's a pretty solid statement and everything that needed to be said was. Of course, no apologies for certain past actions.

I thought they were going to become a Veterans club or something? Probably just a mafia instead.

Why do we need two threads?

Could we merge this into the longer discussion going on in the thread above? Please!

not really any need. The political discussion will carry on in the politics forum, here a news story has been posted and the effects of that news story have been discussed, quite lightly too.
I'm pretty sure if anyone wants to get into the nitty gritty of the political effects they'll go to politics, so far the responses here have just been brief opinions. In other words there's no real debate going on here.

    Intresting how things are worded.

Irish website has something like "IRA will end all activities" while CNN has "IRA will disarm but will not disband", and doesn't really go into the details of the statement.

There is no mention of disbandment. The statement has to be welcomed. We shall see what happens next.
