all the platforms appear to be lengthened, and they should have finished the overhead line work by now - so does anyone know when eight-car DARTs are going to start running?

Haven't got enough coaches yet, since the original fleet is being refurbished, more than 12 coaches are out of service because of that. That number should reduce slightly once the program is fully up an running

There is a minor issue with the power supply at Dalkey which hasn't been solved yet, its minor might not make a difference, there is a open circuit which should be closed to ensure the system will work if a substation falls over

The CCTV and mirrors are not yet fully installed and the extra storage space at Fairview is not yet available. The southbound platform at Glenageary is 8 coaches but the last 40m is blocked off

December 05 is the expected start of limited 8 coach operation and it always was

    Remainder of project

Final works including substation commissioning, and additional sidings at Fairview to cater for the expanded DART fleet will then be completed by the end of 2005, with the overall project set to be completed on time and on budget.

Iarnród Éireann apologises to customers for disruption resulting from this important investment project, which will allow the DART to cater for its record and growing number of customers into the future.

    Fleet expansion
In parallel with the DART Upgrade project, Iarnród Éireann is investing in the DART fleet to facilitate eight-carriage trains. The 40 carriage order worth €80 million has been delivered and are now all in service. The delivery of this order completes the doubling of the DART fleet in just four years, and will also allow Iarnród Éireann to begin the refurbishment of the original DART fleet, now 20 years old.

Anyone know when the first of the refurbnished DARTs are due back. I'm sure there is at least one set due back at this stage! Any pics?

Yes at least one set arrived back in late May early June (set 13), possibly others sets 24 & 40. The unit will need to be recommissioned since it was taken fully apart during refurbishment and many parts where replaced. There is a new braking system which will finally mean we get anti lock brakes. The fleet always had anti lock brakes but they never worked right from day one

Externally they will look indentical, the differences to watch are new door buttons and possibly new head/tail lights. Internally they have been gutted and rebuilt and have CCTV amoungst other improvements. If you get one you will notice the difference instantly

Incidently the original fleet can only run in 6 car formation so it is assumed the refurbishment will deal with that, another reason why it will be December
