Progesterone pill

    Hello.

I know this isnt a medical forum and obviously before i get a prescription I have to go to the doctor, but I would like a few opinions/input on people's experiences.

I am currently on Microlite, one of the lowest dosage pills, and have also been on mercilon and a few other low dosage pills in the past.

I had to change pills as I was getting sick and was advised to try different low dose pills.

I have currently run out of Microlite and have to go to the doc for another perscription in a few weeks.

Microlite is also making me awfully sick - on a daily basis at this stage. Very very bad headaches also - to the point that I cant get up and balance. I have been on Microlite for almost a year. I was advised by my doc to keep taking it as the side affect might settle down- but seem to be getting worse.

So, I was also told that my only next pill option (I prefer taking the pill, rather than anyother method -such as patches, rings etc) would be a progesterone pill.

Currently, I also have put on weight (arse you could use as a shelf) since taking microlite (i am not an overeater and eat sensibly etc).

I have heard that progesterone pill can also help this?

I read recently in a magazine about progesterone pills called "Norimin", "Ovysmen" and "Loestrin". Does anyone have any experience with these?

What are your opinions on this type of pill?

    Thanks

If you are being sick on a daily basis then you really do need to talk to a doctor.

    honestly
whatever opinion you get on any pill, it makes no difference to you because everyone reacts differently, hence, even if a certain pill works for a poster, doesn’t mean it will for you.
You need to go back to your doctor and get him to sort this out for you, if you are not happy with your doctor, change to another one.

Get a second opinion from another doctor. Get them to give you options.

Oh I know that it works differently for different people - but I would like some people's experiences on the progesterone pill - if they have any good/bad experiences.

On a different topic, but somewhat related to this - I cant afford to pay 50 yo yo's to go to the doc to say I have side affects everytime I get sick!

And yet again, some what related to this, doctors, even female ones in my experience, do not give one hoot if I have side affects or not. Hence the original need for info/experiences on the progesterone pill. I find a need to arm myself with info before I visit the doc as normally the doc shoves you in and out in 2 mins (and charges the 50 yo yos).

First of all I have to say you are right about doctors not giving a crap about your contraception, thats why it is best to go to a well women clinic.
They are great, do not judge you and give lots of options.

    Is that the mini pill??
Ive heard about one thats called noraday or something thats ment to be very good, few people said there were no side effects, for them.

If it is the mini pill your looking for, the drawback is that you have to take it within one hour for it to be effective.
Mind you, if you are getting sick all the time what is the point in being on the pill in the first place?
Side effects are supposed to be gone after about 3 months.

I find cilest (combined hormone pill) to be the best Ive tried. I found Yasmine terrible, made me crazy! But everyones different.
You should definately try the patch, ring or injection. Some of these are not effected by getting sick.
I found the side effects from the injection bad too but my advice would be to try everything.

Some doctors have a student price, some collages have a free doctor. Ive heard you are advised to visit your doctor like twice a year or around that, for smears and bloodpressure. Esp. as you may be changing to different types of contraception. But do try a well women clinic or a different doctor.

Changed from the combined pill to the mini pill about two years ago...Noriday too and find it much better. Aparently Im "oestrogen sensitive" whatever the hell that is, hence the combined pill turned me into a nutter.

Im also on Noriday and the only thing I find annoying about it is that you cant time your breaks. You'll get a period whenever your body wants.
Aparently its one of the most popular pills on the continent. (the minipill) that is. But not so in England & Ireland. He had his ideas about why, (which were very helpul and gave me an insight into the psyche of most gp's)
I didnt put on weight with it, although in saying that, I didnt put on weight with the combined pill either.
I would suggest you go to a clinic rather than your gp. There are two I would recommend in the Dublin area, suffolk street clinic and the ifpa (irish family planning association. Have a list of questions ready in your head and ask away.
Its your body, your paying a fortune, ask your questions.

I went to the doctor today and sat there so confused for 10 minutes.

She basically said you have to take Noriday continuously as the same time everyday and that it is not as effective as the combination pill.

She told me that it works 1. by thickening the mucus at the cervix 2. by reducing the lining of the womb so conception cant occur.

She also told me that you get real periods on this as opposed to the timely bleed you get on the combination pill hence eggs actually do get fertilized.

So here is my dilemma now: I took my last combination pill monday and today thursday this morning got a bit of a bleed-nothing now. She told me I had to take the first Noriday today.

Eventhough I got a prescription for noriday (I felt a bit under pressure to decided there and then), I feel like I made a mistake. Thinking about after the consultation, I am HORRIFIED to know that it is less effective than the combination pill and also that I get a real period but that eggs can actually get fertilized but dont stand a chance (or alot less chance) of attaching.

I dont know what to do. Side effects of the combined pill or terrified of the noriday progesterone pill.

Am so confused. Still thinking of not taking it and going to another doc (50 euro down the drain today) and getting Microlite again. Have until tuesday to get a perscription but am in two minds....................Noriday today or back to crappy (but at least I am at peace of mind) combination.

All I can suggest is you have to decide on:

    (a) sticking with the existing pill until you see the doctor
    (b) changing over to the new pill and if you have moral qualms about it, avoid sex for the moment or use condoms and spermicide, until you see the doctor.
    (c) taking neither, but realising that you need to discuss with the doctor as to how soon whatever you take will be effective.

But it is really something you need to discuss with a doctor.

You should definately not go to a normal gp - as was already suggested go instead to well woman or Irish Family Planning Association or some organisation like that who specialise in this area. I went to the Marie Stopes clinic in Dublin for a "family planning consultation" (40 euros) - although its generally a nurse you will be talking to and not a doctor (unless you specifically ask for the doctor who you can only see on i think friday and monday) they are so helpful and communicative and knowledgable I would definately recommend them. Im sure the ifpa are the same.
