Most laptop and pc's would have built in "intergrated soundcards" Newer intel laptops based around the 915 chipset use intel's new HD audio" high defintion "... Others use the likes of Karajan Audio and AC97 These are all ok for joe bloggs who's not to pushed about the likes of dolby surround sound and THX and so on ...but most people who want to enjoy high quality sound for both thier laptop and home pc will normally use one of the Creative Audigy2 Sound Card Family which support supporting DVD-Audio playback, 24bit 192kHz format and 7.1 and above sound in games and movies..for the laptop you can use a PCMCIA card to slot your soundcard into or there is also a USB version aswell ...with the pc you can use a PCI card version or usb ...The advanage for using these would mainly be seen in the likes of gaming and watching DVD's ...Heres is abit about them here http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/creativeaudigy2/ .
there is also some other great sound cards out there the likes of PHILIPS make them aswell and many more companys but the creative Audigys would be the more well know and well used..
    I hope this helps you
