It appears in one's public profile, so I will opt out for the mo....

(Actually, scratch that. It appears for me, but I'm special.) Can anyone else see steveland's number in his public profile?

This is a little experiment by Regi (this time it does have have money grubbing motives) to provide a new service for boards members, but it's just at the "what if" stage right now so you can safely ignore it :)

(I don't want to elaborate since it's not my baby and nothing might come of it).

Don't worry, the only ones we'd torment are the ones who set out to get banned, but for whatever reason put their mobile number in the profile. There's always one.

Seriously though, whenever Regi goes live with this, I suspect he will restrict access to the info further, "need to know", etc. So don't worry. :)

Its something I'm playing with at the moment. That profile field is private - no one can view it bar you. You would sign up for it by popping your number in there. Then you can send an sms to a user on boards (provided they've put their number in there too), whilst keeping your number and their number private.

You'd type something like 'msg steveland? how's it going?'. Steveland would then get an SMS saying 'msg from regi: how's it going?'. Both sides would need to be in for it to work.

Anyway, as ecksor says, its really in the 'what if' phase. I'm just checking it out to see if its a viable thing to do.

    regi /ano

how would you send the sms?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,227 ✭✭✭✭Sparky

incorporating a webtext based program, quite like what i use for my o2 sms a plugin for office outlook that sends sms messages over the internet to mobile phones and your number pops up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,487 ✭✭✭Kevin_rc_ie

so we'd send them using our own accounts? sounds like a clever plugin he's putting together.

i thought he would have got some "free" web text thingy

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,346 ✭✭✭✭KdjaCL

Costs 25p to send a message and 7p goes to boards if thats the system they using.

We do want your money, we're just very confusing about how we try to get it out of you.

Well, ICQ offer a free text service to IRL mobiles, perhaps boards could incorporate something like this into the site?
Where the sender can only send a message to people who have them listed as a buddy, and neither party actually gets to see each others phone number.
    Or something.

What is it about the phrase “doing it for the money” that people have difficulty comprehending?

I don't think we want a plugin to kill people....

Though the admins do have strange agendas.

Brilliant idea Regi! I'm in :)

If this could be rigged to work from mobile to mobile via the boards network, it'd be brilliant for Boards Beers, the For Sale forums etc.

One feature that would be needed though is to make sure it takes account of your ignore lists.

And you might need to Bubbles-proof it! :p

Would this not have the huge side effect of allowing Boards population of muppets, of which I may be a part :), to set themselves up for the service and then send wide ranging abusive texts to pretty much anyone else signed up for it?

Maybe Ive missed a part of the concept, and forgive me if you have already thought of this, but the system will probably need an "allowed list" of users that I am willing to take SMS's from? Rather than just being open season.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 10,501 Mod ✭✭✭✭ecksor

I think the law takes a dim view of sending abusive text messages.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,548 ✭✭✭Draupnir

Yup, Im sure it does, to a degree. But of course, I could also go into town, but a SIM card for 15 quid and use it as my number on Boards. Use said number to then spam the arse of someone or else abuse/threaten/stalk someone.

Just a concern and I thought it might be useful of me to point it out.

This seems like a fantastic idea to me though and would extend Boards community to a completely different medium. I think you would just need to be careful since it has moderation issues.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,374 ✭✭✭Gone West

Eh. You can sign up with any number of free web services and send all the abusive SMS'es that you like, If thats your thing.
In my opinion, this system would leave the users far more accountable for their actions than any of these free www sites. I assume payment would have to be made by paypal/cc/etc. This would mean that any abuse would be almost immediately traced back to the actual person, not just a username.
Tbh, I think abuse of the system will be *almost* a non-issue.

Like I say, just pointing it out. I agree that its more than likely a non issue.
