    Hi all,
I am planninf a round the world trip next july, going to asia, new zealand and hopefully south america.
the thing is i wouldn have a clue about how much money would be needed to fund such a trip

the flights are about 1500 for the year, through USIT or one of those operators. i would be going on the cheapish and not drinking much.

has anybody undertaking such a similar trip. and how much did you take or spend for the year.

Thanks a million and any help is appreciated :confused:

I went on a similar trip and spent approximately €1000 a month. But I wasn't skimping on decent hotels or good restaurants and had I been budget-minded I could probably have spent 1/3 less.

NZ is expensive, certain countries in South America are very cheap and most countries in Asia are cheaper still.

What you spend will largely depend on the kind of accommodation and food you require, and how many organised tours you go on.

You're also looking at about €500 for travel insurance and a couple of hundred for vaccinations as well.

I am also planning an around the world trip at the moment, but going in November. Just a reminder about the flights. Yes they are quoted as about €1500, ours are costing us €1630 but then there is nearly €400 tax on top of that which I totally forgot about.
Also Visas will cost another bit, depending on what countries your going and if your planning on working along the way.

thanks a million, well nothing is finalised yet. never took into a/c, visas or the cost of extra tours.but if i put 2500 away for tours and tickets, maybe that would be enough.
It good to get a indication of costs from others like yourself. ill be able to budget the trip better.

if anybody else has any indication of costs, id appreciate it

A good tip - if you do a bit of research on accomadation in different places - your food for the day should equal one night's accomadation. That will give you an idea of running costs. Then you also have tours, transport, emergency funds etc.

Some friends recently made the trip to Oz, via S.America & NZ. Plan on not working for about 3 months and brought 5k Euros with them each.

I think by the sounds of things, i should bring about 10K after flights, it would have to do the tours aswell, but i hope to do the TEFL courses so if im stuck and going through china or south k, i could work there for some extra income

I spent almost a year in Oz/NZ/Cook Islands/L.A. last year.

I would say bring as much as you can afford to, or at least have it accessible to you back here in Ireland.

I opened up bank accounts in both Oz and NZ when I was there, and had funds transferred to them (you will need a bank account if you wish to work in either country). There is a fee for such transfers, but at least you won't be stuck for cash.

I also loaded my Visa card with c.€3000 before I went but only used that when I really needed to (mostly near the end of my travels).
A credit card is also very handy for advance booking accomodation, flights, etc.

I stayed in hostels (the better ones!) for all of my trip (except L.A.).
The standards of most hostels in Oz and NZ is excellent. I stayed only in YHA hostels in NZ because I got a YHA card in Oz ....and YHA 'clients' are usually of a slightly older age profile (i.e. more people in their late twenties, early thirties, etc.)

(N.B. - I took out travel insurance with Coverworks (via Visa's Australia, Dublin) but had major hassle getting a partial refund when I returned home earlier than planned. (Their literature boasted a refund if you returned home early 'for any reason' when I took out the policy). Draw you own conclusions!)

    Silvera.
