Help! Mac Word keeps crashing on Powerbook

I have 12" apple Powerbook with microsoft office installed. It works fine normally although I have noticed that every so often when my other half connects his powerbook to it and tries to open Word with his documents it won't work. Not only that but when I go to use Word afterwards it is completely mucked up. He tried using it on Sunday and since then although I have been able to open word up fine it has crashed when I have tried using the "Save as" function. The only thing to do is to make it Force Quit and that means I lose all my work. Can anybody tell me how to fix this?
