Well I know people in Commerce, not an easy course fro mwhat I'm told but if you have the ability to secure it as a course you should be able to get through it providing you do a bit of work. Social life in Commerce is meant to be good craic from what I've heard aswell

Congrats drdre for getting in!Well pros of commerce are that you get a free little lap top which is cool to keep in touch with your boards.ie buddies oh and studying too!Lived with a girl doing commerce and french in 1st year and she didnt study much and passed. But she did go to every single lecture and tutorial. It depends wether you want to get honours or not but just to pass its easy enough to do with a little bit of study.Everyone i know in commerce is pretty sound so you should have good craic to!

im pretty sure that you dont get a FREE laptop im hope fully headin therethis yr,just finished the leaving, and at all the open days they showed the prices and they started at bout 700 yos. although you get free internet access all over the building....cool

No there is no FREE laptop in Commerce. It wouldn't be very fair if the D4 Commerce heads get a free laptop when the cost of one to them is nothing but loose change in their back packet

They're subsidised, as far as I know. I'd say check out the UCD website but I can never get the information I want from it. There are wireless hotspots all over campus, not just in Commerce, but people have been known to sit outside Quinn in the freezing cold when the buildings have closed.

And Zane, I don't think that comment was altogether fair. Before the opportunity arises to call me a commerce head, I study arts... and I'm anything but D4. I just think an awful lot of really nice people get a hard go in UCD because of how they look or what their accent is like. Slagging Commerce students is as bad as ripping it out of Ag students.

AFAIK every UCD student can avail of that subsidised laptop scheme from Dell. Though a friend of mine was looking at it one day and he found a better dell laptop for less on dell's site, so I don't have much faith in them.

There are rumours that the computer science department (or school of computer science and informatics as it's now called), will be starting a subsidised laptop scheme for 4th years at least next year. I'm holding out on buying a laptop till I hear about that.

Maybe we could go splits on the two for one offer?

dont buy the laptop just yet, they claim to be on special offer but they're not. Shop around. You will never use the wireless and its much cheaper if you buy a laptop that doesnt.

Now, the social life is brilliant in commerce because the week is sooo ****ing short its not funny. Plus ppl have the money to go out more often.

The course in first year is a recap of LC subjects for those who didnt do them.

The laptop 'offer' you'll get in first year Commerce/B&L is a load of ****e. I was sent the order form last year (I was down for B&L till I got bumped up to Law) and the cheapest one was about €1200, plus they're all from Dell. I ended up ordering the mid-range one, which came to about €1500 when you added the essential warranty/tech support package. I cancelled the order and waited about three months for the whores to refund me. Steer well clear

    ^Exactly.
I'm not a Commerce student, but looking at those laptops, you'd be better off taking a trip to PC World for the €1500 they expect you to shell out.

I got a Dell before I went to college. And it's pretty, and works, and does more than I'd ever need it to do. Dell are pretty reliable.

Too many ppl I know have had to get their laptops repaired/replaced. If you do buy dell, get the warinty

Their "Latitude" models (read: business) are nice. Mg alloy frames, good batteries, excellent screens etc.

I have an old one. It says Dell on the outside but is actually made by Samsung!
