Been noticing that icon a few times in the past few days on my comp and i was wondering what it meant.

Someone told me it may be something to do with the virtual memory in windows.

I have noticed the comp can be very slow at times, firefox download manager seems to cripple the pc for some reason. Mabye someone could reccomend a new download extension as an alternative for firefox's default one?

    My specs are

    amd xp 2000+
    256mb pc2700
80 gig wd ide (8mb cache)
    nvidia 5900xt 128mb

either buy more ram or increase the size of your page file... or your hard drive might be full

My guess is that you have SP2 installed and that's the icon that appears when windows updates are being downloaded, which would hog your internet connection.. If you want to disable this, go into control panel, automatic updates and turn off from there. Just remember to check for windows updates monthly!

That icon also appears when you are getting delayed write failures to your hard disk - often due to a wonky IDE cable or overheating north bridge. (or indeed a dying hard disk)

Not the same icon. As far as I remember the icon you are talking about is the Yellow shield with teh exclamation mark in it. Not the yellow triangle.

aye its not windows update as i have that switched off.

Changed my page file under the advice of moriarty and i havnt seen the exclamation mark yet.

My cpu has been acting fairly eratically tho.

theres a screenie i took from within task manager

    taskmanager3zb.jpg

I had winamp, messenger, ff, thunderbird and xchat running as you can see from the taskbar.

Is the cpu usage not fairly high?

i left it idle while the graph was plotting then took the screenie.

Running XP with 256mb of ram is almost criminal, forget multitasking at all. You need more ram, either buy another 256, or another 512 and stick it in. www.shop4memory.com
