EU WANTS AIRLINES TO PAY FOR POLLUTION - The Financial Times says ticket prices for return flights out of European airports could rise by up to €9 under a proposal by the EU to make airlines pay for the pollution they cause.

The FT says the European Commission wants to include airlines in its strategy to tackle climate change, putting them in the same category as power generators and oil refineries.

Under plans seen by the paper, the Commission wants airlines included in Europe's emissions trading scheme, which caps the amount of carbon dioxide an industry is allowed to produce. The proposal has the backing of the British EU presidency and is accepted by some leading airlines, including British Airways.

It's a good idea. Sure it will be passed onto the customer, but it has to be. There is currently no tax on aircraft fuel, which is fairly ridiculous. The airline industry is one of the most pollutive in the world and pays no environmental or fuel tax.

Cannot wait for the ads from o'Leary attacking this...

Well the EU are already proposing to pay third world debt with a fuel tax, what else will they come up with? An avgas tax to compensate sugar beet growers? If $60/bbl oil won't punish airlines for their gas guzzling - what will? They are paying huge sums to Airbus and Boeings to retire the thirstier machines. If air prices go up, how will all the foreign medicos and nurses propping up the Irish health service get home? Never mind, Bertie won't pay the tax coz he'll be in the Air Corps jet.
