    Cancer groups welcome radiotherapy plans

    25 July 2005 19:46

Cancer care groups have welcomed a €480m Government plan to develop radiotherapy services at four major centres around the country by the year 2011.

The Irish Cancer Society is satisfied with the location of the new radiation oncology services but wants the Government to commit to timelines for implementation.

The group campaigning for cancer treatment services in the southeast, Cancer Care Alliance, said there is still some concern about patients in the northwest region.

The Cabinet programme provides for the development of two centres in Dublin two others at Cork and Galway University hospitals.

St Lukes in Dublin is also to be re-located to St James's Hospital.

The Tánaiste and Minister for Health, Mary Harney said the plan would ensure a world class service and access to cancer treatment in each region.

Where in this does Waterford come in?? I hear that we are getting some sort of offshoot of the service in Cork? I havent got half of the facts so Im reserving judgement here.

The quote.."two centres in Dublin two others at Cork and Galway University hospitals." is standard for this goverment.. Where does Waterford come in?

Apparently there will be a satellite facility in Waterford Regional Hospital. Not too sure what that means because I've only skimmed the press release, which can be found here.

This is it lads. Even read it in the Irish Times today, which means that there's nothing the dubs can do about it. :)

The two satellite units in Waterford and Limerick will be attached to Cork (and maybe Galway in Limerick's case) where there are University Hospitals.

Harney was on WLR earlier and she guaranteed that we'd have a unit before 2011 and that the expertise would be shared between Cork and Waterford. (i.e. they'd be proper experts in Waterford too) She was very convincing, and very clear in her statements.

This is it, lads. :) Obviously there won't be any celebration until the doors open, but it looks like a done deal.

Time to start the University campaign in earnest! :)
