came home from a friends house on Saturday night about 1.00, a bit early to be heading to bed I thought... so decided to have a game of poker.

Due to the few bottles of carlsberg, and a smoke or two I was after consuming, I decided to play a MTT instead of cash game(don't like to risk my cash game bankroll when under any sort of influence). So I played in the 5000 guaranteed tournament on Empire with a $25+2 entry, not really thinking about doing well.. just getting in some practice....

well at around 6am, 4 hours and 50 minutes later, I curled up into my leaba with a smile on my face and $1500 richer.......

Withdrew $1000 of it today... just looking forward to getting the check......

    MTT = Multi Table Tournament

I had to pay in $25 + 2, as did 220 other players... the top 30 get paid.

an mtt is a multi table tournament. He had to pay a fixed fee of $27 but this meant that he could only lose his $27 that he entered with and not loads of money like he could if he was playing on a real money table.

I think you should give the play money tables a go until you familiarise yourself with the different games available.

EDIT: got there before me Jimbling

    Congrats on the win too

Thanks guys.... I don't play mtts too often any more. They are just so time consuming, and are very difficult to win. So I pretty much concentrate on cash games.
But I'm glad I got sidetracked this time... the winnings are now going to pay from my flights from Cork to LA, which involves two weeks of taking in the sun in San Diego, San Francisco and finally..... Las Vegas...

Ill be putting up some posts soon about how to handle Vegas.... I've been there before, but that was pre-poker days.... back when I somehow came away with a profit from playing blackjack and roulette

it depends on where you play...

if you go to pokerroom.com, you can play in the $5 mtts there. Sometimes you could have up to 500 players, and make a nice profit if you do well.

They also have the 5k rebuy there, for a $5 entry... its a bit hectic, but good value for money.

Most of the sites will have 5/10/20 entry fees.... but pokerroom is the most frequent....

Paddy Power have loads of cheap MTT's also. They have some play for fun ones also where there is no entry and no prize but it might be good for practice to get a feel for it.

If you are looking for low level entry MTT's with alot of runners, then betfair is a good site to look at.

They have MTT's kicking off every 15 mins or so.

    P.S If you do join www.betfair.com, stick in code 39RNV6PXK , I will get a free £20, so will you ! ;)

Betfair is ok 4 MTT's, i actually won a MTT last night, only $2 entry but nice profit all the same. But i find Victor Chandler/Paddy Power a lot better as the Betfair tournes are extremely slow & can be very irrating.

Congrats on the win jimbling & all the best in Vegas.

If you mean by this that they run 10 minute blind levels, where after 2 hours play the BB is still only at 1600, you are correct.

I prefer that to 3 min blinds myself that PPP/VC specialise in.

And i find VC/PPP MTT's to be too quick.

Example Friday night 5$ MTT, we were down to 18 and only two players left in the tourney had more than 10 BB's. There is no chance of any sort of skill coming into it then. All in or fold, nothing but a crapshoot.

    My point exactly Rodge

there are plenty of MTT's on PPP with 8-12-15 minute blind levels. I don't mind the speed levels at the lower entry fees, but only play the 12-15 minute levels for anything higher than $10.

I think those structures allow you plenty of room to outplay people. Not that I do very much...;)

It would be an interesting exercise to see the blind structures of the various sites for MTT's.

    I think PPP/VC starts at 20/40 2000chips , Ladbrokes 10/20 1500 chips, Betfair 7/15 1500chips, Party 7/15 1000 chips, Pokerroom 10/20 1500 chips.

It then of course depends on the following increases in blinds level by level.

All I know is thinking to myself was that 1600 BB after 2 hours play (which would make ii level 12 or 13 I guess) was pretty reasonable.

    Well put Iago.
That tourne i won last night had less than a 150 players & lasted 3 hours & a half, if that had of been on VC/PPP with 8 min blinds it would have been a maximum of 2.
The blinds only become rediculus on VC/PPP in the turbo/speed tournes which are 2/3 min blinds, which i don't bother playing.
And the blinds on betfair are far stiffer in the later stages than that of VC/PPP.
I actually was referring to the players & the time limit on betfair not as much as the blind structures.

That's because there is more players entered, so prize money is bigger ...isn't that the point?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 83 ✭✭gdez

I'm talking about tournes of the same size players & same size pay structure.
Don't get me wrong betfair isn't bad, but i find VC/PPP a lot more enjoyable, win or lose.
