Should I upgrade to Tiger?

    Hi,

I need some advice on upgrading to Tiger, particularly surrounding application compatibility.

I have an original 12" Powerbook with an 867MHz G4 and 640Mb RAM. I am currently running OS X 10.2.8

I need to make sure that the following applications will run properly:

    Microsoft Virtual PC 6.1
    Microsoft Office X

I don't want the expense of upgrading either of these to newer versions. I am also concerned that the OS might take up more memory, leaving less for Virtual PC and making it run even more slowly.

I want to do a clean install anyway as I need to get rid of a lot of crap and am planning to buy a Firewire external Hard Drive for this purpose (any advice on this would also be appreciated).

I am also slightly apprehensive about spending money upgrading to Tiger as I am keen on getting one of the Intel Mac Powerbooks due out next year.

EDIT: Another thing - are there any issues surrounding running Classic (i.e. pre OS X applications) on 10.4?

VPC will break most definitely, i've upgraded from 0s x 10.3 to tiger and all i did was copy the microsoft office install, and it worked fine on the new OS, so i assume it'll do the same again...
When i first installed VPC on tiger with out a new fix from microsoft upon reboot VPC would ask you to reboot again and again and again...

    Thanks for the reply.

I take it this fix is for Version 7 only?

Although I use VPC infrequently it is important that I can run some PC Software so I might give Tiger a miss for the moment.

I just get frustrated when I encounter programs which only run on 10.3 onwards!

Office X is compatible, dunno about Virtual PC.

To be honest, you should probably get 10.3 - a huge improvement over 10.2 plus you can get it pretty cheaply on eBay now.

As regards Intel powerbooks next year, I wouldn't be holding my breath!!
