I just got an Acer Aspire 5021 a few weeks ago, and upgraded the operating system from Win XP Home to XP Pro by runing "upgrade" from the XP Pro disk.

I connect to the internet with EsatBT Broadband using a ZyXEL Presitge 600 modem.

My problem is that when the laptop comes out of sleep mode it wont go on the Internet or send/receive emails. The systray shows I'm conected at 100 Mbs, but I just get timed out when trying to connect. I use FireFox, Outlook and Thunderbird.

    Any ideas?

    ZoneAlarm and the XP firewall.

But this should not prevent conection.

    try this:
right click "My Computer" goto "Properties" click on the "Hardware Tab" then click on the "Device Manager" button. find your network card.. right click on your network card and goto "Properties". Click on the "Power Management Tab" and un-check "Allow windows to turn off this device to save power".

also, I remember there were lots of people reporting connection not working with Zone Alarm, it has an option where it blocks internet access after some time, or on standby as I remember, search in the options, disable, see if it works.

This seems to have worked. Did all you suggested... put laptop to sleep... and its connecting when I wake it.

I'll give it a good test over the next day or two and report back.

Thanks for all the help guys (especially CG). And on a Saturday evening too!!!

BTW, is it ok to do this? Does it cause problems in some other area?
