Noise pollution from building works

I'm wondering what the legal situation is re builders who work through the night or in the early hours and make lots of noise. Can one make a complaint to the Gardaí?

I live near a city centre and there's a lot of building work going on up the road from me, apartments and offices and such. The problem is they seem to do some major stuff now and again in the early hours, I imagine so as to not disrupt traffic.

I was woken at around 5am this morning by incessant pounding that went on for about 10 minutes and was extremely loud, like a loud automatic machine gun or something.

I've checked a little online and all I can find is an act which suggests working it out with the people involved and if this fails bringing them to court. But can I just ring the guards and get them to shut them up?

    Any help appreciated...

Standard planning permission conditions generally link works to 8am-7pm M-F 9-1 Sat and at no time on Sun/PHs. Report breaches to the police and when they tell you it isn't a criminal matter ask them to visit the site so that you can confirm the breach to the local authority planning enforcement when the office re-opens. They don't have the authority to close the site but if the works continue after the workers are informed of the planning breach they can face sanction from the local authority as they have been formally notified of the breach and subsequently can't deny knoweldge of its existance.

Let the board know how you get on.

It's definitely a valid complaint - if you check the papers tomorrow there may be guidelines about limits/what to do, as the news tonight referred to noise & out of hours complaints from residents re Dublin Port Tunnel.

Department of Environment covers noise pollution, there are now maximum acceptable levels for various scenarios, AFAIK. To further your cause I think you need to record the decibel level (possibly done by a Dept Inspector, maybe not weekends tho).
Reporting to guards may make a difference, I don't know.

i doubt you will get any success with this problem in or near the city centre - with some projects the work can only be carried out during the evening/night etc as to do it during te day would cause more disturbance - i dont know what the type of work you are referring to is though so i dont know the situation with that
