Well i got a 200gb maxtor sata drive today. My system now looks like this.
I have on IDE1 my 250gb ide harddirve as master and my cdrom as slave.
I then have the new sata drive as the master sata :) .
So i powered up and before it goes to start windows i get that message:
Windows did not shutdown properly - And then u can select safe mode, normal ETC..........
I selected normal, the screen went black and the pc restarted  . So i let is start up again and i got the same screen. This time i selected safe mode and the same happened, the pc just restarted :(.
So i unplugged the sata harddrive and all was well  . The bios detects the sata but now my pc wont start up with it plugged in ???

Does any clever person now wats wrong, :p , come on, sum1 is is clever here :D

Sounds like you don't have enough power.

possible solution: buy a new PSU.

*Looks up wearily from my post outside Peats and say's*... my girlfriend had exactly the same problem but it turned out to be a virus...possible avenue to look into!

Cult i think im thinking wat u are thinking :( . Do sata hdd draw more power than ide. Up until today i have been running 2 250 ide hdd's. I swapped 1 of them for a sata 200gb. This psu ran the 2 ide ones fine?
Now about a virus, well im not sure, i dont even no if this thing is formatted, as i say i just swapped this with unclerosco today and now this has started?

Well i will have to try again one of these days. This new psu is going to have to be top priority. Getting a bit nervous of this 1 tbh. Been having a few random restarts but i tried to lie to myself and act like all was well

Hi,dont ever mix cdroms and harddrives on same ide as the harddrive will go as slow as the cdrom.Your system will crawl.

Put cdrom on ide 2 on seperate cable.

    regards kieran

    Mine runs fine

Edit: You are right but my CD drive does not go fast enough to effect the overall
speed of my harddrive. But yeah, separate ide cables for each device is always good

they will work but your speed is reduced big time.Try copying from hard disk to hardisk and you will see.

Put on seperate cables and load time will be faster.your cdrom may be pio4 or ata 33 but your hard drive if relatively new in last couple years will run at ata 133 or ata 100 depending on the make.Only time you will not see a performnce drop is system is a p2 system with a small harddrive like a 8 gig or so.so to the best of my knowledge it goes :pio4-ata 33-ata 66-ata 100-ata 133 which is the fastest IN IDE.

Which would you rather be working at?

    regards kieran
