What (good) hole cards do you never play?

For me, it's AKo. A fairly decent hand, and I've seen people win big with it, but anytime it's been in the running, it's broken my heart. I can play it, bet big, be called down by 44, and either the pair holds, or more often, a set comes up.

At the other side, a mid-pair gets called down by AK, what do you think the first flop card is?

It's been killing me for the last 3 weeks on PPP, and now when I see it, I just fold it. Anytime I've seen the flop after, I've yet again missed it, so until AK starts doing it for me, I ain't touching it.

    Play nice lads ;)

Corblimey, the not so subtle message that they are trying to get across is that with more time and education you'll realise that the times you don't play AK in the hole will have far more to do with your read on the table and position and betting rather than the fact that you think it's an unlucky card.

Ak can be a nightmare to play, far too many people raise big with it preflop and then feel obliged to throw massive bets at flops they haven't gotten near, I rely on this in games I'm playing, saves me having to try hard to accumulate chips :D If you play it passively then it's fairly easy to get away from on a nothing flop, but again that depends on position, table read, size of the blinds, stage of the tournament and so on and so forth.

To summarise, there is no good hand that I "never" play preflop, I've been known to fold AK, QQ and JJ on occasion but that depends on the table and the situation at the time. I've lost with AA 12 times this week (8 times in one day, I posted about it) that doesn't mean I'm folding them the next time I see them!

Iago, I got the not-so-subtle message thanks :) My question really was about a feeling for a certain pair of cards. As card players, most of us need to know that we're going to win the tourney we're playing and that begins with the hand we're in. If you turn a pair of cards that have never done much for you, either through playing them wrong (which I readily admit I may do from time to time on AK) or just through sheer bad beat after bad beat, your mind set isn't going to be right, and for me, there's no point in throwing money at it til it goes away.

Yes, position, stack size, other players' play, etc, all that comes into whether you play your "unlucky" hand or not, but I was kinda hoping to see if anybody just folds (or checks on BB) what others may consider a good hand, like 88, or ATs or anything like that, based soley on that 'feeling' you get that the hand is working against you. That's all.

I don't believe AK will grow on me, until such time as it proves worthwhile for me to chase a pair on the board. But right now, if someone raises into me with AK, I fold like a cheap hooker. As I said in the op, I've been beaten too many times with it (losing when I had it, losing when I faced it) not to have the wrong mindset over it, and I don't think reading a book or whatever DapperGent had in mind, will make it better

Yep they are clearly gay :p

Hate playing them. they look a lot better than they really are

I dont like Jacks, that doesnt mean Im going to make a 200BB raise like Juan Pablo and it doesnt neccesarily mean Im just going to limp, Im going to play the hand whatever way I feel is right at that moment to try and win the maximum amount of chips possible.

K9s is my favourite hand, 9 times out of 10 that i've had that hand i've won with either 2 pair or a set, its just lucky for me. J8o is a hand thats caused me a few problems from the bb though, I chuck them on sight.

Queens are gay! I wont play a queen with anything.
I had a pair of queens in my hand today (snigger!)
And I was beaten with a straight (snigger, snigger!)

The strategy I use with with AKo is go all in or lay them down and it's difficult to lay them down.

    this thread hurts my brain.

The concept of the localised contortions of universal probability in or around your vicinity not withstanding, I confess amusement when people alter their play due to the relative position of "their" luck (being either "in" or quite possibly "out"). This amuses me simply because, I like money.

I, like Hectorjelly, will shield my eyes when I get my first Royal Flush. I will run screaming and attempt to surrender my bet and get half my stake in the pot back.

I mean, I've never won with that hand!

    DeV.

ps: Welcome to Boards Corblimey, it gets kinda rough around here but we always have Group Hug Tuesday to look forward to.
