hey i have 2 compasses which are very accurate, i would just like to get some tips off people who have experience with using compasses on how to maintain accuracy. Can they be permantently damaged by exposure to strong magnetic fields? I wear on on my watch and would being near a computer of radio affect its accuracy? Its a wegner compass and excellent quality and very handy. Any advice on it's maintenance?

all magnetic compasses will be less accurate near magnetic fields or magnetic materials like iron. vibration is bad - it's a mechanical device so wearing on your wrist might not the the May West. radios are OK, unless its a transmitter and even then probably ok unless it's using a magnetic loop. Loudspeakers have Big magnets and monitors have a degaussing button when turned on so best not too near them.

ps. you can check the accuracy against the north star any ^clear moonless ^ [strike]day[/strike] night ^when you can get out doors and there aren't any obstructions^, usually * only applies north of the equator.

Yeah its a wrist watch so its quiet accurate..i compare it to another compass i have a ranger one swedish made..not sure on model but quite good.. its filled with liquid.my wrist compass is a needle that is quite accurate almost perfect but it is very sensitive..hope i can maintain what accuracy it has...but can compasses be permanently damaged by magnetic fields..cheers for the info..

as for pighead...i was not sure where to post.sorry about posting in the wrong section but i think you reaction was a little harsh towards me...getting banned for a simple mistake? I wont do it in future but still U cud tell me the nicer way and id still do it without feeling u are against me...
