Upgrading laptop memory

    I've a Compaq Presario with 512 MB of 2100 DDR-RAM & am considering upgrading it to 1GB.

Would anyone know if I'd need to install 2100 DDR-RAM only, or is it possible to use higher memory speeds (DDR 3200, or 4200) ?

    TIA,
    Lionel

It is probably OK to use the higher rated sodimms, if they're cheaper, but you're aware that you won't get any speed benefit from them?

    You don't mean 2100/2700/3200?
4200 tends to be DDR2 which I think will not work.

Part of the reason for upgrading is the added speed benefit. Would you know why there won't be a speed improvement? I assumed its just a matter of setting a new FSB in the BIOS (though I've never done this before)

Thanks for the tip about 4200 being DDR2 !

You will get a better performance from having more memory, its just that in terms of memory speed, the PC will operate at the speed of the slowest memory(in your case 2100 or 266 mhz), though this wont affect performance to windows/appz.

You cant change FSB on compaq computers, these settings are hidden from the end user
