Hi, I've got a round the world trip(oz, thailand, US) booked for this sept for 5 months with trailfinders. their insurance is very expensive though-over €300. anyone book insurance for a similar trip for cheaper? i've seen a couple of sites on the net for around €150, eg justcover.ie. never heard of them so just wondering if anyone else has booked cheap insurance on the net and if they were ok. Thanks!

    my post is no 5

my advice would be stay away from the online guys and in my case especailly getcover.ie /com. Stick with the brokers or at least somebody who can deal with your claim locally if you have one.

Also if something does happen, think carefully about what you are going to tell the insurance company or report to the hospital, ie if you slipped running down to the beach because it had just rained on the rocks, don't tell them that sort of thing as they will say you focking edjit you should have etc etc. Watch out especially in car/bus/van accidents as a lot of the policies don't cover them in the way you would think.

I too have been looking for travel insurance for a RTW trip booked with trailfinders. I agree that their insurance is very expensive. Ace travel insurance seem to be a good option. Coverage is not quiet as good buy it is way cheaper (E90 for a family I think).

I work for a travel insurance company. Read your policy carefully! Insurance companies are very evil indeed.

Just found a site: fyi.ie that has the insurance i'm looking for for just €94.50. it seems to cover most of the same things as trailfinders. I remember seeing posters for it around ucd a few months back but don't know anyone who's actually used them. anyone know anything about these guys?

No idea I'm afraid. We just do it for UK customers

i was looking at that fyi site too- their insurance seems very reasonable. looking for insurance for three weeks for thailand but don't really know if there's much difference in cover. did you find out anything more about them

I booked with fyi last week. checked a good few sites and it was the cheapest one. compared their cover with trailfinders and it's pretty much the same. couldn't see any huge differences and trailfinders was almost four times more expensive.

I paid 270EUR for 1yr RTW insurance a few years ago.
I'd recommend to read the policy carefully, especially the exclusions.
Also check what hazardous acitivites you are/are not covered.
Some insurance companies regard fishing as a hazardous activity.

My insurance was with Europ assist based in Navan IIRC.
I had alot of stuff stolen from my bags when away.
It took nearly 3 years to get anything back on insurance.
In that time they lost my file twice, and normally couldn't find
anyone dealing with my case when I called.
I don't recommend using these guys.

Also as someone mentioned, if anything does happen, be sure
to get police/hospital/airline reports (sometimes you have to do this within 24hrs), and keep plenty of copies of these and your airlines tickets,
    for the insurance company.
They'll use any excuse not to pay up.
