Snowboarding...

I'm thinking about a snowboarding holiday cause I've never been on a real holiday and I hate the sun (a true nerd!).
I'll have about £1000 at the end of the summer as a bonus for (hopefully) a job well done so I reckon I'd need to start organising now.

So, who's been? DeV, I know you have. Where's good to go to? What sort of cost? Will a fat man like me kill himself on a slope? Will my long hair help my control (like a cheetah's tail)? wink.gif

I've been twice, to the cheapest snowboarding destinations around, Andorra and Bulgaria, Andorra is much more family oriented, but has wide easier runs which are more accesible.. decent snow coverage and occasional powder as well.

If you want a good resort though with excellent conditions and facilities go for the French Alps, I was there sking a while back and was brilliant.

Oh you'd definitly want to get lessons if your in anyway balance impaired (as I am), I didn't and while it took quicker to get used to it than it did sking, I ended up on my **** much more and stopping is hella hard, next time I go I'll be getting them so I can enjoy it a bit more.

November to March is the off-peak season, but try and go for January at some stage, not the cheapest during that season but your guaranteed good powder (although Bulgaria was a ice rink when i was there, not good).

Rent your gear (clotheswise, Great Outdoors is great for this) and get your lift-passes/ski/snowboard hire sorted (usually with the package anyway) before you go, usually a lot cheaper that way.

Most important thing is sunglasses (honestly) due to sunglare (I lost mine half way down before and my eyes were killing me for ages) .. make sure you've a good plastic pair that won't fly off and can take a little bit of damage smile.gif

    [edit] (didnt see this question)
Will a fat man like me kill himself on a slope?
Nah.. but you'll plough quite a number of kids out of it on the way down, and in the end thats a good thing smile.gif

Cool é sin - Andora is the name that's cropped up most while talking to people. My brother and a few mates are thinking about it too, so this could be a goer.

Thank's for the info Kali. I'll need to get bomb proof pescription sun glasses so - my current ones are reaction lens, but somewhat on the delicate side.

And of course, anything I can do to hurt children (who I hate) is a good thing!

When you say rent the gear, you mean rent it in Ireland before we go over? Just seems like a bit of stress carting it over, but as you say, it's cheaper so fluck it.

Must start looking into packages now. Any recommendations of what company to talk to?

    Cheers!

Yeah, Andora is cool, however, watch out for the Snow-Mites man. Those snow-mites can get under your skin in a couple of seconds if you leave your exposed skin deep in the snow.

If you go to your GP before you go he can sort you out with pills that you take every morning to basically "scare off" the mites.

Andorra is pretty good for a holiday if you're beginning and if the party side is what's important. It's pretty wild, as long as you pick the right place, Soldeu being the best. Drink costs practically nothing, and the concept of a measure is unheard of. Down side is - there isn't a huge ski area and on a bad snow year conditions can be ****e.
Best place I've been to was Kitsbuhel in Austria. Manic partying, great apres ski, and a great big ski area. Close to the town too so not much walking to the lifts.
Also been to Chamonix, a bit overrated I thought. Great big ski area, but a lot of it you have to get the bus back and forth. Which is a pain. Apres and partying wasn't great either.
This year we went to Sauze D'Oulx. Hugely overrated!! But the boarding was absolutely amazing. It helped that we had 2 feet of powder halfway through the week.
Next year an epic three week trip to whistler in Canada. Yeehar!!!
Soldeu is a good introduction to the whole thing. Do take lessons, it's easier. And be prepared to fall on out ass constantly for 3 days. But after that things start to come together. biggrin.gif

Dev yes!! Livigno rocks! I was there for a week in march, the whole package cost about 500 quid (flights/accoms/gear/liftpass/instruction) and the food is really cheap. It's also a duty-free town so there's some great bargains. I mate of mine came back with a new digital camera and I brought back about 6 litres of booze and a shedload of swiss chocolate wink.gif

Just went snowboarding for the first time 2 days ago in Germany at an indoor place. It was real snow though not that dry slope stuff. The place was huge and keeped constantly at -7 my clothes literally froze (I was just wearing a pair of tracksuit bottoms a huddy and a T-shirt) had to buy gloves half way through though as my hands nearly fell of whit the cold from getting up after falling over or slowing down as I like to call it. It even had ramps and grinds the braver people could go on. It cost 65DM for the whole day plus your board and such. I thought it was super DDddddddddddddddd duper.

Karn have you been snowboarding befor ?
if you have not you might think of doing a few lessions befor going just so you do not waste time when you get there with learning too much of the basic stuff, just might give you a few more hours out on the real stuff smile.gif

killternen just out side of dublin do it 4 lessions about 3 hours each on sundays. not nearly as nice as real snow but.
it does not cost too much.

Oh you total ******* TU154, I hate you!

I boarded the Rockies in Utah last year. They have great big Las Vegas-like signs saying "The Greatest Snow On Earth" and they aint kidding. 6 days of perfect powder.

On Livigno, yeah, its the best EU place I've seen. Centralised, great wide slopes (so you dont crash into the sides smile.gif ). lots of Blues and reds for beginners/intermediates but only two blacks which limits it for more experienced riders, still, theres TONS to muck about with there.

The only down side to Livigno is that the night life is a bit sparse, but its good all the same. And its a 4 hours coach ride up from the airport which sucks. Hard.
But the place itself is excellent.

Oh yeah, the boarding questions smile.gif

    1. You shouldnt have much problem staying on the board. Its not like surfing, its a bit more like skateboarding with more speed control.

    2. Do NOT go to the artifical slopes unless you are getting leasons there. And even then consider it carefully. Its very very dangerous stuff on a board. (you can bust wrists, knock yourself out and generally ruin your holiday before you ever get there).

    3. The good news is that with a little smarts and some good equipment it is exceptionally hard to hurt yourself on a board. In 7 years of boarding I've been hospitalised once and injured enough to miss the next day once.
The first was my own stupidity trying to wipe my DNA from the gene pool. Lets just say I took a jump I thought was about 4 foot which turn out to be 8 foot with a lip on the edge for some added in-flight circular motion. *whump*.

If you are smart and dont go off piste its hard to do any serious damage to yourself. Except your pride of course smile.gif

    hmmm

I thought about that training before I go and then thought that it's harder than snow and probably more painful when I fall over a bit. I like snow - it can be hard, but it's a soft kind of hard smile.gif

Anyway, once again - thanks for the tips!

Who is The Beefy King ?

Owing to an administrative error, the Pope had been replaced by Lemmy from Moterhead...

I think the lovely Miss Duffy mentioned something of it too, so I'll round up a list of peeps.
