Right this a long shot but I'll try anyway. Right myself and my girlfriend are off to the States (San Diego and San Franciso)in September for a couple of weeks and I'm toying with the idea of going to Vegas for a couple of nights. So far I'm looking at the Aladdin Hotel http://www.aladdincasino.com and I was looking at the Luxor but I was warned off that hotel by someone who stayed there. I was just wondering if anyone has been to Vegas and if so where did you stay and what did you think of Vegas itself and your hotel. Or if you've been that side of the states can you recommend anywhere else to go??

    TIA,
    kayos

I went to Vegas a few years back and it was great!! You can have a fun time even if you choose not to gamble. I stayed in a hotel called the Fiesta (fairly tacky tbh) and we took a trip up to the Grand canyon which was very beautiful indeed. Id say that its the kinda place you wouldnt want to spend too much time in, about three days MAX (even that would be pushing it). Its becoming more "non gambling type person" orientated than it was before so if you'r not going to do that you'll be ok.

In my experience people eiher love the place or hate it. I guess you won't know till you get there biggrin.gif

I went last year. It can be great fun. As your friend said do not stay in the Luxor, looks great from the outside but the rooms are just ok and the air is far too dry and the main part is too big and not very friendly at all.
Go the Grand Canon I paid for a helicopter flight out over hover dam then landed on the bottom of the Grand Canon and had lunch and champagne, then a flight back over the strip. About 160 dollars but the best money you can spend if you ask me.

Treasure island: is nice stayed on the 36 floor of it's got a great view.
Caesar’s Palace: nice but costs lots to stay in.
Mirage: nice the volcano outside is well worth seeing.
Buccaneers bay: again nice place you can get to it by monorail from Luxor (free)
Good place if your looking for net access $10 half hour, there are very very few internet cafes, over there. And most hotels charge lots for it.
Things to see Grand Canon (must see) downtown light show. $1 million in 100 $10,000 dollar bills, bit of fun.

If you like rollercosters then you can have fun, I went on 16 rollercoster rides in one day (adrenalin junky I know smile.gif
    Best Rollercosters:
Rollercoster on the top of the Stratosphere 110 floors up, it goes around the outside of the building 110 floors up, about 1000 feet up, then there is the shot just 20 feet more up, you sit on a seat strapped to the outside of a steal tower then your shot about 100 feet up feeling about 4g then weightlessness then falling down. Happens about 3 times great fun.
Rollercoster at “New York New York” goes around the outside building about 50-150 over ground and goes over the gambling floor inside the casino loop, twist and some big drops good fun J
Sahara Rolercoster 0-60mph in 1.5 sec then a left, loop, then up vertical stop and fall backward and going all the way back to the start backwards.
MGM coster not worth going to but the air ride is if your brave enuf to do it.
They lift you up about 25 feet then tie you to a cable hanging from about 200 feet then drag you off to the side still your about 100 feet high and about 130 feet from the end of the cable at about the same high but in frount of you. Then they let you go and you fly like a dive-bomber then fly up again to the other side again and again till you run out of speed. (Just for the real brave)
There is more there if you go to the Circus Casino they have some great rollercosters and other rides but the dam place is full of dam kids.

As far as the Aladdin is concerned it is a fabulous hotel, but to be honest while it is the newest it is not the best. The casino is great and the themed shopping mall is incredible (very convincing with a wind machine, and one section that actually rains and street performers - all indoors).

But if you can stretch to it stay in Bellagios, Caesars Palace, Venice, Paris, or Bally's (in that order), all of which have far nicer rooms than Aladdin, and are much more luxurious.

The best thing about the Luxor is it's incredible to look at and is the largest hotel in the world, but apart from that it hasn't got that much to offer.

If you are going to Vegas you should DEFINITELY try the Helicopter flight of the strip at night, gives a great view of the strip but only lasts about 15 mins - run by Sundance Helicopters, who also do Grand Canyon trips.

Is it me or is Los Vegas immensely expensive by Irish standards (note Irish hotels aren't exactly cheap either)?

I'll have a look for the name of the hotel we stayed in over there, it was $60 for a fairly decent place.

Hmm, it was the San Reno I think ...it was San something anyway, get you the info again. When are you heading exactly?

Can recommend the Grand Canyon, Sedona, in fact almost anywhere around that part of Arizona, it's the most beautiful state I was in.

Talk to you at the weekend.

    Al.

Ring around check if there is some thing going on when your going like E3 (Las Vegas has the worlds biggest conference center) check the diff casinos as one place can be $260 a night when just as nice a place across the road might just be $60 other thing is to check if you can get 2 bed's room, it works out cheeper if you were going to be renting 2 rooms and you can get much nicer room.
see the Hover Dam, the Canaon, and the strip at night by Helicopter or from the top of the Stratosphere.
you can find out what is happeing when your there from the small books in the taxis, they have info on everthing happening in town.
