Dell CD Burner - Not Burning Properly

The Burner on my Dell will not burn CDs properly. It copies the CD, and doesn't register any errors, but when I play them they suffer from distortion and drop-outs. This has been an ongoing problem since I got the PC. I've been on to Dell: they ran all kinds of test and scans; downloaded updates; and replaced the CD-ROM - All to no effect.

The last time I was on to Dell they said it must be a software issue, and that they would have to reinstall Windows. As I would have to pay for the reinstall (it's a software issue, so not covered by the warranty. Plus, I'm a PC moron, so I couldn't do it myself) I asked a friend to do it for me. He did - and that didn't work either. To take the issue any further with Dell, they'd have to do a reinstall, with me over the phone, before they'd look at any other options.

What I won't to know is: Are others having similar problems with their Dell Burners, are they the problem and not the software, and If I bought a new CD-ROM, would that fix the problem?

Any help would be hugely appreciated, as I've been trying to sort this out for the last 16 months, and at this stage I'm more then a little fed up with the whole thing.

I've had no problems burning cd's with my D4600.

What model is yours as a matter of interest?

if you're do anything else while burning the CD that could be the problem. And I mean anything, especially if the computers more than a couple of years old.

It's a D2400. I tend not to do anything else while I'm burning CDs. It seems fine burning other media, just problems with CDs, that burn fine on my mates PCs.

What software are you using to burn cd's? Have you tried different ones? How about different media? Try swapping the crdrw into your mates and see if itsthe same. Did dell replace the cable to the cdrw as well?

It's not a software issue, I've used a few and they all have the same problem. I've used different cdrs, which worked fine on other PCs. Not sure about the cable, I didn't fit it myself.

Have you tried burning at lower speeds? I had a problem with burning my CD-Rs at 16X (missing tracks, drops in quality) so I hemmed it back to 8X and had no issues after that.
There is also the possibilty tht your IDE controller is somehow to blame...loose cable, faulty circuit...I'm no expert in that regard but if you've troubleshot the s/w then it can only be hardware...
